Again, memories of her life came in her dreams. Flashes of people she could not recognize. Feelings she could only imagine were for the love ones she left behind. One memory resurfaced over and over again. One feeling grew stronger every time she closed her eyes. Who was the man with the handsome face and the red-ginger hair and the heavenly blue eyes? And a smile that made her heart flutter every time she thought of him.

Liz shook her head, frustrated by what she could not remember. She opened her eyes, awakening in a sunlit room. She took a deep breath and looked around the empty and quiet room. Arnaud had been there. A fresh bouquet of wild violets sat on the table near the window. The wonderful fragrance filled the room as she appreciated all the small gestures he bestowed on her. These flowers, she remembered only bloomed during the early summer months. At least, she knew what time of year it was.

“Good morning.” Arnaud stood in the doorway, smiling.

 She smiled back, feeling very uneasy. He wore a paint covered overalls and white sleeveless shirt. She blushed, noticing his sun-kissed skin, muscled arms and strong forearms. He carried a tray with a big bowl of strawberries.

 “Would you like some fruit?” He offered her the bowl. “I had a difficult time getting them, but I thought you’d like some.”

 She nodded. “That’s very nice of you. Thank you.” She tried to sit. Gently, he helped her sit and offered her the bowl filled with juicy strawberries.

 “You feel better?” He happily asked.

“Yes. Much better thank you.” She smiled.

 He ate a strawberry and said, “Do you remember anything?”

 She stared at the handsome stranger and tried remembering any small detail. But she shook her head. “No.” Tears filled her eyes. “I’m afraid I never will.”

 He took her small hand in his large one. “You will.” He was an optimist. She liked that about him.

 She sighed deeply. “I’m only remembering bits and pieces.”

“Give yourself some time.” He smiled then left the room.

 She nodded. Yet, inside she felt hopeless and so alone.

 So many days passed and she still did not know the answers to the questions she had been asking herself since she awoke after her accident; an accident for which she possessed no memory whatsoever. Nothing could help her remember her life.

 She touched her neck. There she felt something under her borrowed shirt. It felt like a chain holding a ring. She stared at the ring, trying to remember who gave it to her. She sighed, frustrated once more by her lack of memory. Could the ring have been a gift from Arnaud? She wondered. Then, she took a closer look at the ring, searching for some clue. Then she saw an engraving. “All my love, P.”

 Who was this kind and sweet person? What was his name? She groaned and touched her head. Why couldn’t she recall anything? As she stared at the ring once more, something hit her like a bolt of lightning. A face. A man’s face. The same one she dreamed about but could not recognize. She felt as though this man loved her deeply. She could recall his red-ginger hair, his sparkling blue eyes and his smile.

 A strong feeling washed over her as she began remembering more details of this man. She saw him flying a Tigerwolf plane and she was sitting in front of him in the cockpit. It all felt so very familiar, yet strange and distant at the same time. Could this man be the one who gave her this ring?

Her heart jumped in her chest and a breath caught in her throat. “Yes sir.” She stood as did the others and saluted Philip.

He saluted back. “Follow me outside a moment, please? I must speak with you.” He asked, not waiting for an answer.

She nodded and followed him outside without asking any questions. It didn’t matter what he wanted. Every moment spent with Philip was always precious to her. And since she arrived at Hornchurch, they barely spoke a word to each other. They were training with their own squadrons, and opposite sides of the airfield. She missed their talks. She missed spending time with him. And now he stood a mere breath away. Yet, instead of her childhood friend, she found her superior officer. And she tried keeping her thoughts of touching him at bay. She wanted to jump into his arms and hold him tight. And she wanted to tell him how happy she was to see him after all this time. She rubbed her arms. It wasn’t the cold making her tremble so. The dark and chilly spring night was quiet except for a few soldiers walking around.

“Here.” He wrapped her in his jacket and she felt the warmth heat her body. And she could smell his scent; a mixture of soap and musk. It was his scent. An unfamiliar stirring invaded her. What was wrong with her? She walked beside her childhood friend; not her lover. Yet, she felt her heart drum in her chest. She took in a silent breath and hoped he didn’t notice her nervousness. They walked around the pub, keeping a reasonable distance from one another. Liz tried swallowing the lump forming in her throat. Never had she felt so conscious of her body than at this moment with Philip. He stopped and stared at her. She looked away, feeling her cheeks warm. She was thankful they stood away from the pub lights. This way he couldn’t see her blush under his stare. Then, without warning, he took her in his arms and held her against his body. After all this time apart she finally touched him and felt him and yet, she could not find the words to tell him how much she missed him.

Liz was happy and grateful for this moment with Philip. Laying her head against his chest, she felt so warm and secure in his arms. All her memories of the times spent with him flowed back. She held back the tears threatening to leave her eyes.

“Are you warmer?” Philip asked, not letting her go.

She nodded, tensing, awaiting his kiss without realizing she lifted her face in invitation.

“I’ve missed you so much, Liz.” The words were little more than a whisper.

Disappointment washed over her as he kissed her brow then stepped back. “I’ve missed you too Philip.” She looked into his heavenly blue eyes.

“I’m surprised seeing you here of all places.” He smiled, taking her hand and sat on the bench a few feet away. No one saw them.

Indeed, she felt as though they were the only two people in the world. She felt her heart race when his warm muscular thigh brushed against hers. And he held her hand in his large one. She stared at their joined hands. Never did she feel so nervous with Philip. All this was very unknown and frightening. “Do you think we’ll be fighting soon?” She asked, changing her train of thought.

“Soon. With the battle in the Atlantic, they need more ready pilots.” He held her hand in his and looked at her with serious eyes as she remained silent. “Liz. Promise me you’ll be careful when it’s time for you to on missions. I know I can’t stop you, so promise me you’ll take care.” Philip’s tone was firm but soft.

She nodded without taking her eyes away from his. “I promise. And you do the same.” She was so afraid to lose him.

Philip nodded as they sat in silence a little while longer. She wished so much Philip kissed her. But he didn’t. He held her in silence. And he never said how much he missed her. It was for the best he said nothing. If he told her how he missed her or loved her, she may fall into his arms and forget her dreams. And she wasn’t ready to sacrifice her chance in the Royal Air Force for more than friendship with Philip. Or was she?

She lifted her head and his eyes met hers. He stared into her eyes for a long while. And she felt herself melt on the spot. What was wrong with her? She stared at his tempting lips and wished he would kiss her. Instead, she felt his hand cup her cheek and his thumb traced her lower lip, leaving a trail of heat. He didn’t kiss her but the intimate gesture sent waves of warm sensations all over her body. His eyes stared into hers with intensity. And her heart drummed in her ears. Anticipation alerted all her senses. “Liz.” The low rasp in his voice sent another wave of sensations through her body. She bit her lower lip and closed her eyes for a quick moment.

Philip sat so close; she could feel his hot breath caressing her cheeks. Her heart jumped in her chest when his lips touched her cheek and the delicate skin near her ear. “Liz,” he whispered again in her ear. A new sensation centered in the special place in her lower belly. She saw stars behind her eyelids and waited for Philip’s next move. Will he kiss her? She didn’t know. His hands kept her warm against the cool air. Indeed, she felt a bit over warm and unsure of her body. Philip never touched her in such an intimate way before. His lips lingered near her ear. And his hot breath sent shivers along her skin. She turned her head ever so slowly and met his eyes. She could see his eyes darken. He cupped her cheeks and leaned his forehead against hers. Their lips brushed together. Voices in the background brought them back to earth. Philip broke his embrace, leaving Liz breathless.

Quickly, she regained her composure before someone saw them together. She glanced at Philip and his face didn’t show any trace of emotion. “I should go,” she said, swallowing hard against the lump in her throat. Tears threatened to leave her eyes. Before he said a word, Liz removed Philip’s jacket from her shoulders and walked toward the camp.

Philip rose from the bench without saying a word. He let his feelings for Liz get the best of him, and he may have destroyed her trust and friendship. He cursed under his breath. How could he have led her on in such a way?He watched her walk away and he wanted to go after her and hold her in his arms. And he wanted to kiss her. Again, he felt his body tighten with the thought of tasting her sweet lips, and how close he came in realizing his dream. She was so soft against his body. And he loved her scent. He raked a hand through his hair, and sat on the bench. She made his blood stir, and he felt so alive. But they could never have a life together; not now. The war forced him to choose a life without Liz. They could remain friends; if she still wanted his friendship after what he put her through.

Normandy, France

Liz looked at the starry sky and prayed she’d find the British troops camp in time. The allied invasion began in the French region of Caen. And if the Nazi soldiers found her, she would never go home.

An eerie silence surrounded her. But she knew the enemy patrol was near. And they would arrest anyone involved in the invasion. As she rode Arnaud’s old bicycle down the dirt road, a breath caught in her throat. The calm June night didn’t bring her any comfort or joy. Every little noise brought her uneasiness.

Quickly, Liz changed paths and rode behind some trees and bushes. She heard voices shouting behind her. And their frightening dogs barked incessantly. Her heart hammered in her chest as she pedalled faster. “Over there,” one of the soldiers called out. They approached her way. Liz looked around her, finding a hiding place while they passed by her. The moonlit sky offered some light guiding her way through the thick bushes but it also did not help her in finding the perfect hiding spot.

The voices and barks grew closer and closer.

Liz covered her bicycle with a few leafy branches then she huddled in a ditch. She prayed the soldiers wouldn’t find her. She closed her eyes and saw Philip’s face, remembering the last summer they spent together with their families; so much happened since then. Their love grew into a magical reunion of two souls; an unbreakable bond. Now she had no idea if she would ever see him again.

Glancing around again, she could hear the German soldiers and their dogs a few feet away. Her heartbeat drummed in her ears. Her whole body trembled as tears filled her eyes.

Be brave, she repeated to herself.Closer and closer still, the soldiers approached the edge of the ditch. Liz brought her legs closer to her trembling body, and she closed her eyes. “Philip. Please come find me,” she whispered.
