EXCERPT:

She woke to sense a presence nearby, the feeling that another person was close. Forcing open her heavy-lidded eyes, she saw him standing beside her, broad shoulders tapering to narrow hips, silver light glinting over the curls on his chest and brushing glistening streaks through the rich golden hair on his head.

He was big all over, and hard. Not workout hard like the men she knew. A warrior’s body. There didn’t look to be an ounce of give to him anywhere. He was without a doubt the most masculine man she had ever seen, muscles limned in the ambient light, his face defined by a square jaw and high cheek-bones. She couldn’t see the color of his eyes in the dark, only that the faint light from the sky shone in them, reflecting the lust burning there.

Her heart trip-hammered, and she tried to move away on the bed.

He reached out and placed it a hand on her arm, stopping her. “No. I won’t harm you. Don’t move.”

She looked around. Yes, this was her bedroom, her window with the moonlight streaming in. But who was this man standing so close to her?

He lifted the sheet covering her naked body and drew it back, as if unwrapping a package, his eyes devouring her as each inch of her was revealed. Her flesh shivered under his gaze. When she lifted her arms to cover herself, he shook his head. “Why would you want to hide a body so beautiful and tempting?”

Erin dropped her hands to her sides, unexpectedly craving the stranger’s touch, the caress of his gaze on her skin. Her heart hammered against her ribs and heat bloomed throughout all her erogenous zones. How could she be doing this, exposing herself to a total stranger? Yet it seemed so very right. So…so…fated. That was it. Fated. As if arranged by a power greater than both of them.

But you know what the strangest thing is? I’ve never written a story with a football player as my hero. I guess it’s just one of those things, although I don’t know why. If anyone is an alpha male, it’s gotta be a football player. Right?

I used to manage rock bands and ciountry western sisngers, and it took me all these years to write a story with one of them as a hero. In March my novella, Having It All, will be out as part of Ellora’s Cave’s Flavors of Ecstacy I-The Cavemen Series. As I do with all my heroes, I fell in love with MacFontana while I was writing this. I actually found a picture of someone who cam pretty darn close to looking like him, and kept it tacked to my computer station the whole time I was writing it.

But today my heart belongs to the Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Kurt Warner, who is a true hero.

January 29 will see the release of The Edge of Morning-Book One: The Sentinels, from Total-e-bound. There will be eight novellas in all (amybe more, if you all really, really love them! *wink wink*

The cabin in Maine her grandfather left her is the perfect place for Sierra Hart to take a good long look at her future. She’s just quit her job and ended yet another relationship. Surrounded by five thousand acres of pristine forest, the place  gives her the solitude she need. The only other sign of life is a gorgeous silver wolf hanging out at the edge of the clearing. When Luke Spencer knocks on her door, she has no idea he’s going to fulfil all of her erotic fantasies. But can she ask for his help when the lumber people become more aggressive or will he turn away because of the secret he’s hiding?

EXCERPT:

By evening, when the sun had dipped well past the horizon, the temperature had dipped along with it. Sierra built a fire in the huge stone fireplace and warmed some cider. She was about to stretched out in front of it on the thick cushion s she’d tossed on the floor when a knock sounded on the heavy wood door.

Now who? But this time I’m prepared. And tomorrow I’m getting a chain to go with the deadbolt.

Who’d have thought she needed it way out here?

She picked up the loaded handgun from the table where she’d left it and held it behind her back with one hand. Flipping on the porch light she opened the door with her other hand, barely cracking it two inches.

“Yes?”

“I think I’m lost.”

The voice was like melted chocolate, deep and warm and enveloping.

Sierra opened the door a little wider, looked at her visitor and every bit of saliva in her mouth dried up. The man on her porch was well over six feet, lean and broad shouldered. Dark brown hair with traces of silver dusted his shoulders and framed a starkly masculine face—high cheekbones, square jaw and unusual amber eyes. A long-sleeved black T-shirt and well-worn jeans clung to well-defined muscles.

Holy shit!

After three tries she found her voice, and then it came out sounding like a squeak. “Lost?”

“Yes. I’ve been hiking in the woods, and I probably got disoriented. Listen, I promise I’m not an escaped murderer or a rapist on the loose. It’s safe to let me in.”

Clutching the gun behind her back, she swung the door wider and he stepped inside. Up close his presence was even more overwhelming. She felt surrounded, all her breath trapped in her lungs, her legs suddenly shaky. She backed up until her legs hit the table behind the couch where she carefully placed the handgun.

The thick, dark eyebrows rose questioningly. “Were you planning to shoot me?”

She wet her lips with her tongue. “Only if I needed to.”

He grinned, a smile that somehow reminded her of the silver wolf. “I’m certainly glad you didn’t need to. I promised you I’m harmless.” He held out his hand. “Luke Spencer.”

Gingerly, she reached out to shake hands. “Sierra Hart.”

The sound of the doorbell startled her. On tiptoe she peered through the peephole. She was stunned to see Jesse on her porch, dripping wet and shifting from one foot to the other.

She yanked the door open. “What’s wrong? It’s pouring rain. Why aren’t you inside?”

“Can I come in, please?”

“Oh, sure. Come on.” Yes, bring your fantastic body into my house.

“Sorry to bother you. I left my key on the counter this morning.” He raked his wet hair back from his forehead. “Stupid, stupid, stupid.”

Jesse always carried his car keys separately.

“In case I’m ever attacked,” he explained, “I don’t want anyone having a key to my house. I can keep an extra one of yours too, if you want.”

Another link to him she should have avoided.

“I’ll get it,” she told him now, “but come into the kitchen. You look like a drowned rat and you must be freezing. At least get that wet shirt off and let me make you some coffee.”

“I’ll drip all over your place,” he protested.

“Tile floors are easy to mop.” She took his hand. “Come on. I’d feel terrible if you got pneumonia and I could have prevented it.”

In the kitchen, she flipped the switch on the coffeemaker while he took off his shirt. Then she handed him a large towel from the stack in the laundry room.

“You look exhausted. Bad night?” Her heart pinched at the weary sight of him.

Jesse scrubbed a hand over his face. “Every night’s bad with the gangs. We’ve got a couple of new ones out there ramping up their so-called initiation requirements. That makes it pretty tense on the streets.”

He was a member of the sheriff’s gang task force, a thankless and dangerous job. On the night streets, he was a shadowy figure in jeans and t-shirt looking to stop trouble before it started. Even in a county as small as Palmetto, gangs were a big problem, many of them migrating south from Tampa.

She’d taken to waiting up for him, reassuring herself that once again he was home safely. If only she could find a way to protect him. Well, there was one if she transformed. But she had no idea how he’d feel about a giant redwolf following him around the county.

She ran a critical eye over him, noting his soaked jeans and pulled out another towel. “You’d better take off the rest of those clothes and let me put everything in the dryer. Coffee should be ready in a minute.”

“I’m all right, Alexa. Honest. I just need to get some sleep.”

How about in my bed?

      Quinn is a dark knight, a mysterious shadow with a tragic past who ahs shut himself off from the world. He chooses isolation over the possiblity of more pain, until he meets Kate – feisty, sassy, and in more trouble than he’s seen in a long time. From the moment he rescures ehr from the side of the highway, the connection between them is so strong and elemental his self-imposed walls begin to fall away.

      Quinn is strong, forceful, yet can be gentle when he needs to. With his black hair and obsidian dark eyes, the slight shadow along his jawline and the black jeans and t-shirt that are almost a uniform for him, he embodies the work mysterious. Kate, who is living on the edge of nerves as she flees from unknown killers, finds herself trusting him for no reasonexcept that connection that zaps them oiut of nowhere.

      Watch for Kate and Quinn’s story later this year.

       I am so wrapped up in romance and the HEA that I have the obsessive habit of reading the end of a book before I finish it. Gotta have that fuzzy, warm, isn’t-that-wonderful feeling, ya know? I cut my romance teeth on Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney, and I am so excited to see their books being reissued. They told such wonderful stories that grip the reader and carry you to faraway places, make you wish the hero would swoop down and take you away himself.

      Now my romance reading is so varied I can’t even put it in a category. I love everything except horror. Nope,. no horror. Too old for nightmares. But I love reading romance so I especially love writing it. My heroes are all alpha males (yeah, I know, but I love the sheer dominance of them along with the desire to bring pleasure to their women). I’m especially partial to military, ex-military, cowboys, etc. But my heroines are all different-tall, short, blonde, brunette, redhead. But they have two things in common: none of them are skinny toothpicks and they are all feisty and sassy, even when the worst things possible are facing them.

      I like to write series, I guess because I like reading them. I want to know what happens tio all the other characters in a story, and how the first ones I met are now getting along.
