Anya Bast is an author I stumbled upon in the bookstore one night. I was actually at a book release party for one of the Harry Potter books. While waiting in line to participate in one of the activities to take home to my son I noticed the cover for Witch Fire. I picked it up, read the back cover and put it back. I walked back by the same isle again and again the book cover caught my eye, so I knew I had to get it and I’m so glad I did.

Witch Fire is about Mira Hoskins a woman who doesn’t know she’s a witch. A powerful, not to mention rare, air witch to be exact. She’s in danger from a group of warlocks bent on using her power and take her life. Jack McAlister is a fire witch who is sent by the Coven, a governing authority of witches, to protect Mira from the warlocks, but he’s finding it hard to keep it professional because of the natural attraction between their elements. While Mira is leanring to harness her powers Jack is straining to control his feelings. There’s also another reason Jack’s bent on protecting Mira. When he was a young boy he watch her parents die by the warlocks magic and he wants to make up for what he couldn’t stop before. Can they stop the warlocks and find happiness?

In Witch Blood, Isabelle Novak is a water witch who’s life has been chaotic for a very long time. Her sister and only friend has been killed by a demon and Isabelle wants revenge so bad that she’ll go against the Coven’s sacred rede: Harm ye none. Running on pain and rage Isabelle will do anything to get the warlock she holds responsible for her sister’s death including freezing the life out of him which is exactly what is happening when Thomas Monahan, head of the Coven and an earth witch, meets her for the first time. Thomas and Isabelle make a shaky alliance to go after the demon that killed her sister while he tries to keep her from doing something with her dark impulses. Only problem is that something more is stirring in Isabelle than the darkness Thomas thinks is there and his presence brings forth desires she’s never knew she had.

Witch Heart is the story of Adam Tyrell, a fire witch with the Coven who’s mission it has become to protect Claire from the demons after rescuing her from her enslavement and finds himself enchanted by her. Claire has lived with the demons all her life as a handmaiden, so when she’s shoved through a portal earthside, she’s not only running from the demons that want her back, but warlocks that want to harness her magic for their own purposes. Things heat up in more ways than one as Adam takes Claire on the ride of her life to keep her safe.

In Witch Fury, we are introduced to Sarafina Connell. She’s having a really bad week and it’s about to get worse when she’s kidnapped by a millionaire playboy who introduces her to a world she never knew existed. She is given a chance to join the warlocks who want to gain absolute power. It turns out that she’s a witch with an untapped gift for creating fire though she doesn’t know it… Yet. She’s rescued from her captors be the very hunky Theo, an earth witch, that has no love for the warlocks at all. He doesn’t believe that she’s an innocent bystander in all of this, but takes her to the Coven anyway. As the battle between the witches and warlocks is waged Sarafina and Theo realize that they have no choice but to trust each other and unite in battle for ultimate supremacy. Will it be a win win situation or will all be lost?

I have to say that Ms. Bast sucked me in from the first paragraph and hooked me for the rest of the books. All her books in this series build on each other, but they each have a happy ending for the main characters of the stories and I really like that. I was sad to see this series end, but thrilled that she wrote a free read for another character in that we see through out the whole series that never got a full length book, so I still had one more story to read. I was also just as thrilled to find out that she was starting a new series and the first book, Wicked Enchantment, was released in January. She is an author that I return to and will continue to return to in the future.

Her website is http://www.anyabast.com. Stop by and check her out.

Tatting is a more durable form of lace that is created with knots and loops. There are three different ways to do this. One way is needle tatting in which you use a special needle to put the lace on. The second is shuttle tatting and instead of a needle you use a special tool called a shuttle to help create the lace. The third is cro-tatting which combines needle tatting with crocheting. It is considered more difficult to do and doesn’t seem as popular in the States as it is in Japan.

I have a book called Learn Needle Tatting Step-by-Step that has color pictures along with the directions on how to learn. It has directions for left and right handers for the double stitch as well. Once you learn how to do this it is something you can do in front of the TV and make without having to think about it. I also have a book called Celtic Tatting Knots and Patterns. There are 12 original designs and it is for needle or shuttle tatters. The below website has both books along with a kit for the first book I mentioned.

My mom has subscribed to Southern Living Magazine for years and for years she’s gotten a Southern Living Cookbook sent to her from the company. I happen to love these cookbooks because they have great recipes in them that are easy to follow. We get them usually in December and they have the recipes that were in the magazines through that particular year.

My favorite cookbook by Southern Living is from 1970 (many years before my birth…LOL) and it’s covered in stains because of the uses it’s gotten. I use it especially for the Four Egg Rich Cake in it. This is the best cake that I have ever made! It’s a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and my family has dubbed it the Keith Chocolate Cake because my step-dad and his family call it a chocolate cake because of the frosting. I, however, have not used the chocolate frosting recipe in the book. I make it with a recipe that came from a Hershey pamphlet that we have had forever it seems. I’m including the recipe in this post for everyone to enjoy. On a side note, I have never used the Easy Chocolate Frosting, so I cannot recommend it even though I am including it. I will include the recipe for the frosting that I use for this cake or you are more than welcome to use the frosting of your choice.

From the Southern Living Our Best Recipes Cookbook:

I figured that it couldn’t hurt to have more than one book to teach me knitting since it’s a little more difficult for me to do. I got 10, 20, 30 Minutes to Learn to Knit because it had great pictures of the different stitches you could do from starting with a slip knot to binding off your project. This book also includes the English Method and the Continental Method and they recommend you try both out whether you are right or left handed to see which is more comfortable for you. No matter which method you choose the stitch will come out the same. There are also plenty of projects in the back to keep you busy.

My step-mom taught me to crochet when I was a little girl, but I could only do a chain stitch and that was about it. Since she never finished teaching me I forgot how. Years later I found a book and needle combination kit by Boye called I Taught Myself to Crochet. I decided to pick it up and see if I could still learn and found that I could and quite easily. The nice thing about this is that it’s not only for right handed people, but left handed too. They have a whole section for each that way no one is confused by the directions.

After that I found a knitting kit by the same company called I Taught Myself to Knit. This a little harder for me because it’s dealing with two needles instead of one, but the directions are clear and are also for right handed and left handed people. Also in both books there are bonus projects, so you can try out your new found skills.

If you would like to check these kits out the website is http://www.wrights.com/wrights/products/catalog/boyeline/taughtmyself.htm

I’m going in a little different direction than the others for this Book Brew. Yes, my books are Christmas themed, but they aren’t the sweet stories your mama read to you. The books I’m talking about are Babes in Toyland I and Babes in Toyland II and both are erotic anthologies from Aspen Mountain Press. I happened across the first book a couple of years ago and totally loved it, so when I found out there was a second book being released with new authors than before I had to get it too. All the stories in both books are fantastic and I highly recommend them.

The stories in book one are:

The Curiosity Shoppe by Rayne Forrest

All I Want by Jefferson Dane

The Nutcracker Returns by Lizzie T. Leaf

In Winterland by Brenda Williamson

The Christmas Card by Diane Charles Linford

Boytoys by JM Snyder

The stories in book two are:

Gift of the Holly King by Maura Anderson

The Game by Jeanne Barrack

Devon Falls: Sticky Magic by Raine Delight

Festival of Lights by Melissa Glisan

Who Offed Holiday Spirit by Wayne Greenough

Heart’s Desire by Michelle Hasker

Christmas Belle by Dawn Montgomery

Christmas Ink by Skylar Sinclair

I hope that you get the chance to read these anthologies and love them as much as I do.

Molly Harper is another author that I have been recently introduced to and she has two book that have been released so far. The first one is Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs and it’s hilarious! It’s about a girl named Jane Jameson, who is a librarian and an all around nice girl, who loses her job at the library. As severance pay she is given a twenty-five dollar coupon for potato skins. While drinking away her sorrows and eating her severance pay she meets a handsome stranger and ends up talking to him for the rest of the night. After getting loaded beyond belief, which she never does, she get mistaken for a deer, shot and left for dead while on her way home. Next thing she knows it’s three days later and she’s hungry for blood. Now that she’s one of the undead, Jane is trying to get used to her new schedule, her feelings for her hottie sire and trying to figure out who wants to frame her for murder.

The second book is called Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men and it’s another riot. While trying to juggle working at a run-down occult bookshop, getting a handle on her relationship with her sire, Gabriel, Jane is also going to have to wear the ugliest bridesmaid’s gown in history because her best friend Zeb is getting married to a werewolf in a Titanic themed wedding. Zeb’s mother is trying to get Jane to marry Zeb instead and on top of that Jane’s Grandma Ruthie has a new fiancé who’s history of dead spouses rivals her own. Now Jane has to figure out how to keep things under control with Zeb and his soon to be werewolf in-laws, keep the bride happy while keeping zeb’s mother from making things worse and trying to find out who the man her grandmother is dating is.

I love these books and can’t wait for the third book Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever to be released in December. Check out Molly’s website for more information http://www.mollyharper.com or her blog http://www.singleundeadfemale.blogspot.com/.

Rachel Hawthorne is a young adult author that has recently caught my attention with her new Dark Guradians series.

Moonlight is the first book in the series and it’s about a girl named Kayla, who was adopted at a young age after her parents were killed. On the recommendation of her doctor she, along with her adoptive parents, returns to the forest where the accident took place to try to make peace with her feelings. Kayla becomes close friends with one of the sherpas Lindsey, who talks Kayla into coming back to the forest to be a sherpa next summer. When she arrives Kayla meets Lucas the sherpa leader and starts having these very strong feelings for him, but can’t figure out why. What she also doesn’t know is that she’s a wolf shifter and that Lucas is her mate and will be the one to guide her through her first transformation. As she comes to terms with her destiny she finds that there’s also danger in the forest that’s a threat to them all. In the second book, Full Moon, it’s Lindsey’s turn to have her transformation, but things aren’t going as smoothly as she thought they would. Connor has always been beside her through everything, so naturally he’ll be with her during her shift and be her mate, but it’s the darkly handsome Rafe that’s been catching her eye lately. When their friends are captured by the enemy, she and Rafe have to work together to try and save them, but being in close proximity to him isn’t helping her emotions. The third book is Dark of the Moon, and it’s about Another sherpa named Brittany. She’s not been claimed by one of the boys as their mate, so she’s facing her transformation alone. The only problem is that no one has ever heard of a female going through their full moon by themselves and surviving. She’s also loved Connor from a distance, but he’s hardly ever noticed her. When they’re trapped together by their enemies they learn a lot about each other, but her secret is also brought to light and it could be their end.

Currently there are only the three books available with a fourth, Shadow of the Moon, being released in March 2010. Check out Rachel’s site at http://www.rachelhawthorne.net/ for more information and her other books.

Kimberly Frost is a fairly new author with two books under her belt. Her first book Would-Be Witch is about a girl named Tammy Jo who happens to come from a magic family, but she doesn’t seem to have magic herself. The only abilities she seems to have is being able to see the family ghost Edie. That is until the locket that holds Edie’s soul gets stolen from her. Then the real fun begins, but you don’t have to take my word for it, especially when you can read the blurb about the book for yourself.

The family magic seems to have skipped Tammy Jo Trask. All she gets in the way of the supernatural are a few untimely visits from the long dead, smart-mouthed family ghost, Edie. But when her locket, an heirloom that happens to hold Edie’s soul, is stolen in the midst of a town-wide crime spree, it’s time for Tammy to find her inner witch.

After a few experiences in dysfunctional magic, Tammy turns to the only one who can help; the very rich and highly magical, Bryn Lyons. He might have all the answers—and a 007-savoir faire to boot—but the locket isn’t the only legacy passed down in Tammy’s family. She also inherited a warning…to stay away from anyone named Lyons.

Her second book Barely Bewitched was released September 1st. It continues the adventures of Tammy Jo as she learns more about her magic and tries to stay out of trouble. This is what the blurb for the book says.

Tammy Jo’s misfiring magic has attracted the unwanted attention of WAM, the World Association of Magic. Now, a wand-wielding wizard and a menacing fire warlock have come to Duvall to train her for a dangerous mandatory challenge. But is there more to their arrival than they claim?

When a curse leads to a toxic spill of pixie dust, the town comes unglued and the doors between the human and faery worlds begin to open. To rescue the town and to face the impossible magical test, Tammy needs the help of incredibly handsome Bryn Lyons, but WAM has declared him totally off-limits. To avoid deadly consequences, Tammy probably ought to follow the rules this time…

On the other hand, rebellion is an old Texas tradition.

I’m currently reading Would-Be Witch and I think it’s a hoot! Ms. Frost’s is an excellent writer and I love the wit and sass she put into Tammy Jo.

Please check out Kimberly at her website http://www.frostfiction.com

Since we’re talking witches this time around I thought I’d write about Annette Blair. The first book of hers that I ever found was the Kitchen Witch. It’s about Melody Seabright that wants to be the host of the new cooking show that the local TV station has, but she can’t cook. Her next door neighbor Logan is a producer at the station and after babysitting his son for him as a favor, she wants his help in getting the show. Things get really interesting when they start working together and a lot more than magic happens in the kitchen. I was very happy to find out that this was the first book in a trilogy and the bookstore had the second two books in stock. I immediately went out and bought them. The second book My Favorite Witch was just as funny and spunky as the first. This one is about Melody’s friend Kira Fitzgerald, the Coordinator of Special Events at The Pickering Foundation and a white witch who’s given up on men after finding her jock boyfriend in bed with her sister. Then she meets her new boss Jason, a former NHL star who’s also given up on women to concentrate on getting his knee healed so he can get back on the ice. Oh, and did I mention he was voted best kisser in America? Once these two start working together more than the events themselves come together. The third book is called The Scot, the Witch and the Wardrobe and it’s about Victoria Cartwright, who is in denial about her witchy abilities. She inherits a magical legacy in the form of a key that unlocks a wardrobe her late grandmother owned. Inside the wardrobe is a carousel unicorn that catches the eye of Rory MacKenzie who’s ancestor carved it and may be the key to his family’s curse. As these two interact with each other more than just their tempers heat up.

I was very happy to find out that she had another witchy trilogy that is all about the triplet half-sisters of Victoria Cartwright from The Scot, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Each book in this trilogy is about each triplet. The books in order are Sex and the Psychic Witch which is about Harmony Cartwright, Gone with the Witch which is about Storm Cartwright and Never Been Witched which is about Destiny Cartwright. Even though I didn’t give a little blurb about this trilogy, I can tell you that they are just as good as her other trilogy.

Ms. Blair is an author I keep coming back to over and over again and I’m excited to say that she’s got a new series coming out that is set in the same place as her two trilogies. The first book is called Naked Dragon and it will be released in January 2010. She also has another series out now that’s called the Vintage Magic Mysteries and as the title implies they are mysteries. There are two books out in that series at the moment and while I haven’t read them yet, they are on my to be read list.

Please feel free to check out her site for all her books at http://www.annetteblair.com/index.html.

Faythe Sanders isn’t your ordinary girl, no she’s a werecat, a shape-shifter. In the first book in this series titled Stray, she’s been able to get away with not doing what her Pride demanded of her for years, which is getting married and starting a family, but after an attack on her Pride by a stray things change in her life in more ways than one. She’s called back to the Pride by her father, the Alpha, for her safety. Faythe’s got this ‘Yeah right, I can take care of myself’ kind of attitude about it, but goes back anyway to find that other tabbies are missing. She’s also confronted with Marc, who is one of her father’s enforcers, his second-in-command in fact, and her ex-boyfriend. He still loves her, but she’s not ready to settle down. When she is taken, things really get moving. She has to save herself and her cousin, call for help and find the ones that got away.

In Rogue, the second book in the series, Faythe has rejoined the Pride and is the first female enforcer ever. She has a lot to prove not only to herself, but especially to her father. With dead toms turning up and a string of missing human women, she’s going to get her chance especially since it’s found that a lot of this can be laid at her feet because of something that wasn’t thought to be able to happen. Along with her partner Marc, and the other enforcers, she’s about to find out just exactly what’s at stake.

Pride is the third book and in it we see Faythe in the most trouble she’s ever been in in her entire life. She’s on trial for her life and it’s not pretty. She’s being accused of not only exposing herself to a human, but infecting him and killing him in an attempt to cover it up as well. There’s also a rogue out there chasing a wild teen tabby cat and causing a lot of problems. Faythe’s sure that she can help the tabby and find the rogue along with her partner Marc’s help, but that’s if she can survive her trial.

The most recent book in this awesome series is Prey. Since I haven’t read this book as yet (it’s on my TBR pile to read next), I’m putting the blurb up instead of writing what I know.

SOMETIMES PLAYING CAT AND MOUSE IS NO GAME…

Play? Right. My Pride is under fire from all sides, my father’s authority is in question, and my lover is in exile. Which means I haven’t laid eyes on Marc’s gorgeous face in months. And with a new mother and an I-know-everything teenager under my protection, I don’t exactly have time to fantasize about ever seeing him again.

Then our long-awaited reunion is ruined by a vicious ambush by strays. Now our group is under attack, Marc is missing, and I will need every bit of skill and smarts to keep my family from being torn apart. Forever.

The Alpha & Omega series is a spin-off so to speak of the Mercy Thompson series. This series written in an earlier time than the Mercy books and it’s about Charles Cornick, whom we briefly met in Moon Called (see the other blog post about this book) and his mate Anna. The series started out as a short story titled Alpha and Omega in the On the Prowl anthology where Charles is asked to go to Chicago to find out what’s happening there after his father, the Marrok, gets an unusual phone call. There he meets Anna and with her help finds out the truth about what is really happening in Chicago. The first full length book is Cry Wolf and the story takes place after the events in Alpha and Omega. There is enough bacground added in the beginning of the book that you will be able to understand the interactions between Charles and Anna, but it is recommended to read the original story in On the Prowl to truly get the full understanding. In this book Anna is getting used to Charles and her newfound rules in a pack. Add to that someone that is trying to cause problems up in the mountains that Charles has to take care of along with convincing Anna that he is her mate and you have one heck of a story. Hunting Ground is a new book in the series that is being released in August. This is about the decision the Marrok is making to out the werewolves to the world and the opposition this decision is getting. From what I’ve read of it so far, this is going to be just as good of a story as the last one.

If you are interested in learning more about her, Patricia’s website is http://www.hurog.com/

This is an interesting series about Rod Gallowglass, a warlock, and his family. This series has time travel, sorcery, castles, monsters, etc. that you would find in most fantasy novels, but it’s set on another planet and in a midieval time period. Some of the characters are magical others have powers like telepathy, teleportation, telekinesis, etc. and the main character’s best friend is a robot horse with artificial intelligence.

Warlock Rock was the first book I read by this author back in the early 90’s and I loved it. I found myself laughing at the references to the different rock and roll bands mentioned in this book. It kept me reading from beginning to end at a time in my life when I was hardly interested in reading at all. I also read the book after this one called Warlock and Son which was just as good as the previous book. I found out later that these books were the eleventh and twelth books in the series, so I set out to find the rest of his books and over the years I’ve found most of them. As I’ve shown the books don’t have to be read in order since Mr. Stasheff does a fantastic job at ending them. I think Mr. Stasheff really did an excellent job with this series. He has also written books about the Gallowglass children (The Warlock’s Heirs series). The Rogue Wizard series is all adout the eldest Gallowglass son Magnus. They take off for him where this series seemed to leave him.

Mr. Stasheff has also written other books over the years within the same genre. He doesn’t have a website that I have found, so if you would like to read more about him or the other books you can check out the information at this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Stasheff

Mercy Thompson isn’t a normal girl. For one she’s a VW mechanic and has no qualms about getting dirty and greasy. The other is that she’s a coyote shifter, also known as a walker. The first book in the series is Moon Called and it is here that we are introduced to Mercy and her world (which is like ours, but has fae, witches, werwolves and vamps in it). Mercy and her werewolf neighbor Adam, who also happens to be the alpha of the local pack, are trying to find out why there are new werewolves in town. With the help of her ex-boyfriend/werewolf Samual they are in for one wild hunt. In the second book Blood Bound we learn a little more about Stefan, Mercy’s VW van driving (think the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo) vampire friend from the first book. There’s a new vampire in town and he’s anything but normal. Stefan has to find out what he is and since Mercy owes him a favor, he calls her on it. Mercy is also dealing with the affections of Samual and her growing ones toward Adam on top of everything else going on in her life. She and her friends are yet again put to the test in this thrilling ride. Iron Kissed is the third book and it’s got to do with the fae. Mercy’s former boss and mentor Zee, is arrested for murder and since his own kind won’t help him she takes it upon herself to. There’s also Samual and Adam still. They both want her to decide who she wants to be with and if she won’t they will. This was another action packed book full of surprises. The fourth book in the series is Bone Crossed. Mercy’s managed to make the vampire queen extremely mad and she doesn’t play nice. Of course there’s a psycho that’s out to get her too and it’s yet again up to Mercy to get out of this mess along with the help of her friends.

I just have to say that I love this series and look forward to each books release. These books have me sitting on the edge of my seat until the very end. I have been known to stay up until the wee morning hours to finish Ms. Briggs’s books. Her writing is fabulous and very action packed and will leave you wanting more. I highly recommend this series.
