I would love to go back to the days when men bowed as women entered the room – we had courtships and ballgowns and horses were the main mode of transportation.  Give me a horse and wagon any day over a clunker that keeps breaking down!

We are looking to give away some books, so in order to do so, you have to work for it/them!!  We here at Coffee Time want to know if you had a series when you were younger that got you interested in reading.  Perhaps a particular series got you interested in a specific genre.

For example when I was little I loved anything that had to do with horses.  Black Beauty and the Black Stallion were my favorites!  I used to imagine I was the one riding the horses – and to this day I love the movies.

The series I loved the most was Encyclopedia Brown.  I loved that you could try to figure out the ending and pick what page the answer was on.  So neat.  Of course when I got older and discovered romance – I was hooked on that.  But I want to hear about a SERIES of books – and if you didn’t get into reading until you were older, we won’t hold that against you.

Today we’re going to be talking about non-fiction……yes, we’re making it real!  Cookbooks, self help books, craft books……..whatever your pleasure – we’ve got it all.

However, to make sure we’re doing our job here at Coffee Time, we need your opinions!  Please be sure to leave comments after my post telling us what your favorite nonfiction book is.  What is it you look for – and does it depend on the time of year?  For me, this time of year I’m always after the diet books……self help getting over the depression of Christmas being over……and then in the spring and summer I’m usually digging up the gardening books……..pun intended!  Perhaps other times of year I’m looking into real crime stories, but there’s enough of that stuff on TV that I’m much happier reading about the diets I’ll never go on and looking at houses I’ll never own. 

hmmm…….perhaps that is why I get depressed…….

We’ve been very busy here at Coffee Time trying to book authors for special day blogs, and thinking of new ways of entertaining you all.  I offered to do a strip tease, but after the ladies stopped laughing, we decided perhaps that’s not what you were looking for.  I then offered up my husband but again they thought perhaps someone younger and … less rotund would be better.  Good thing he didn’t hear that……..

I hope to see you all in the New Year, as we will be constantly working on ways to keep you coming back for more.  More discussions, more books, more reviews, and more ME!  The best of all.  I can’t wait for these comments!

This time of year I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t reflect on all the things that Christmas means to me.  I love that I get to see my children (even though I’m sure they come for the food and presents!) and my husband and I will take time to go look at the lights, listen to Christmas music, and perhaps even *gasp* snuggle by the fire.  Perish the thought! 

Seriously, though, we should turn to the person next to us more often and tell them what we think of them…….. on second thought, perhaps that’s not such a good idea, depending on who you’re next to.  *grin*.  I know in my church we often have the ‘greeting’ time in the morning where we take time to say the things we’re always too busy to say when we’re rushing in – like “good morning’ ‘how are the kids’ “is that your REAL hair?” things like that.

Next time you’re in the mall and grumbing about the line ups, the price of everything, and how stressful this time of year is – think of those who don’t have food to eat, money to shop with, or a family to be mad at.  Those are the people who deserve our blessings.

Sorry – where was I??  I went off into dreamland there for a second.  I know some women (myself included) love a man in uniform, but there is NOTHING sexier than a cowboy.  I loved watched Westerns when I was younger, and often dreamed of having John Wayne (showing my age here) sweeping me off my feet with a ‘howdy ma’am’ and riding off into the sunset.

So let’s sit together and see what Coffee Time has in store for us today!  Also two lucky posters (comments are always welcome and encouraged will win one of Annie West’s novels. 

However, like one comment suggested perhaps the past is better in the past.  Oftentimes our imaginations can play tricks on us and we may remember events/feelings not as they were, but as we wish they had been.  Women especially I think are guilty of associating feelings with actions – which is why we are more turned on by emotion than visual!! 

I’d love to hear more!  What are you working on now?  Will there be a sequel to this story??

How much of your own life experiences have you put in your novels?  Does it dredge up old feelings, and is this a good or bad thing?  I love it when writers take their own memories and put them to paper.

Isn’t it amazing how we wait for special occasions to have nice big meals?  That families often get caught up in their busy lives coming and going, yet never take the time (or rarely) to sit down together and have a big meal?  I know there are families out there who still sit down every night, but I think there are less and less as people get busier.  When my kids were young I was a stay at home mom – which is a rarity these days as we can’t afford to not work with the economy.  My kids are hard working as well, and they don’t stop by as often as I would like – but I certainly understand.

We need to take more time to be thankful for things we have – things we take for granted every day.  I often sit back and ‘people watch’ when I’m at the mall and I can’t believe how fast people walk.  Everyone is in such a hurry to get this, buy that, see this…….it is exhausting just watching them.  And then you have the couples who walk so far away from each other that it’s difficult to see who is with who….and it’s the seniors that you see walking hand in hand.  I love that! I hope when my husband and I retire that we will get to a point where it’s just us and we can appeciate being together….and not want to kill each other!!  lol. 

So think about your Northern friends today and think about what they’re doing with their families – and appreciate your own.  Perhaps you’re alone and this is a sad time…if that’s the case, I wish I could invite you for supper!  Remember that tomorrow will come when it’s ready, things will get done when they’re done…..and life will never be something that is assured, but appreciated.  Man, I’m serious today!  I’m going to have to up my beyotching for next month.

This is your lucky day – a day where your worst nightmares will come to life on this very blog.  I love to be scared, and will often wait outside the bathroom door to yell “BOO” to my husband – who isn’t such a fan.  But it’s even more fun to pull aside the shower curtain while he has his eyes closed washing his hair and then opens them to find me staring at him.  I had a shampoo bottle off the nose for that one time…….

Oh yeah, I was trying to say I missed it, wasn’t I????  In all honesty, once the kids get to a stage where they don’t need you to get things, it is a bit sad.  I was out at the store recently and saw a mother with three kids trying her hardest to get things for them, and one of her children had to be starting grade one.  Everytime the little boy would say something about first day of school, when he turned his head, she had a sad look on her face.  Letting the kids go is not always easy, though I’ve known people who couldn’t wait to throw them on a bus and be rid of them for the day.

If only we could do the same for spouses…..you know, when they get on your nerves and you want to press the mute button, but it doesn’t seem to work?  I wish I could do that sometimes when my husband starts to act like one of the kids and is unable to function without me.  I love him dearly, but God help us all if he’s sick, right?  We women function no matter what.  I can remember hobbling around the kitchen with crutches after spraining my ankle and still getting supper cooked and the laundry done.  We are tough!!

I love that you don’t define yourself by what others think.  I think more people (women especially) should stop worrying about the world and start feeling what’s inside.  You’re doing a great thing by letting it out on paper/screen…..and to try different genres is a plus too.

Now what about your non-fiction work?  How do you compare the two?  Does it take more, or just different, preparation to get ready for that type of novel?  Inquiring minds want to know!

I still love a great book – give me a printed one!!  I can’t handle reading online or holding little readers in my hand.  I don’t need to be in with the crowd – it’s all about the reading for me.  I love laying back in the tub, sitting on the beach, or just hanging out on the patio…….and having the glare of the sun on a screen – not fun.  Dropping it in the tub or getting sand in it – not fun.  Having a paperback……….AWESOME!

I often wonder what authors do in their ’spare time’.  As a mother myself, I can understand when another woman says she doesnt’ have much spare time.  But would I change it? No.  I had someone once hold open their calendar and complain about all the things they had to do that month.  I said “how would you feel if you opened up an empty page?”
