Asher’s Invention by Coleen Kwan

Hello from Sydney! It’s winter here, but we don’t get really bad weather where I am, and I love the crisp cool weather; a welcome break from our hot humid summers.

This time last year I signed up for a 50K in 30 Days challenge hosted by my national writing group, Romance Writers of Australia. I’d been writing for about three years and recently sold my first novel (woo-hoo!). Up until then I’d focused exclusively on contemporary romance. I’d always loved reading historical romances, but never seriously thought about writing one. But last June I felt I needed a break from writing contemporary, and I’d heard about a new genre called steampunk (well, new to me) and read a couple of spiffing good steampunk yarns. So I decided June would be my ‘playtime’ where I would try to write a little steampunk novella and just have some fun with it. Turned out it was a lot of fun, and I finished my novella by the end of June. After a week or more of editing and polishing, I sent it off to my editor, and to my amazement she liked it! So now, a year after the idea hit me, my first steampunk romance is out!

So what is Asher’s Invention about?

• A brilliant inventor finds fame and fortune, but his heart remains cold after he’s betrayed by the one woman he loves.
• A young woman, desperate to rescue her ne’er-do-well father, must humble herself and approach the one man who can help her, a man who also despises her.
• Ingenious inventions and remarkable gadgets.
• Ruthless villains, hideous slums, and a desperate struggle for survival.
• Against all odds, romance and love rekindled.

I enjoyed researching the backgrounds of the zany inventions I came up with. I tried to base them on valid scientific principles, but sometimes my imagination just took over.

But what I enjoyed the most was bringing my hero and heroine together and making them struggle to leave their painful past behind. Asher and Minerva make a perfect couple, yet they’re let down by their personal failings, and when they are brought together again by the kidnapping of Minerva’s father, the love they have for each other is still as strong as ever, but they have to overcome their failings in order to reach their happily ever after.

I loved writing my steampunk romance, and I hope my readers will enjoy the story too.

Asher's Invention blurb:

Five years ago, Asher Quigley broke his engagement to Minerva Lambkin, believing she was an accomplice in a scheme to steal his prototype for a wondrous device. Minerva swore she was innocent, though the thief—and Asher’s mentor—was her own father.

Now, sheer desperation has driven Minerva to Asher’s door. Her father has been kidnapped by investors furious that he’s never been able to make the machine work. Only Asher, now a rich and famous inventor in his own right, can replicate the device. He’s also become a hard, distant stranger far different from the young idealist she once loved.

Despite their troubled past, Asher agrees to help Minerva. He still harbors his suspicions about her, but their reunion stirs emotions and desires they both thought were buried forever. Can they rebuild their fragile relationship in time to save her father and their future together?
