A Meeting of Two Spies

An excerpt from Sleeping With Skeletons. This scene is a text book example of two spies checking for tails prior to a meet.

Danny made his way to the outskirts of the crowd and stopped, glancing toward a bank of phone booths. Claire leaned against the last one, looking even more casual than usual. Her smooth brown legs were visible below the spandex jogging shorts she wore. He cursed under his breath when he saw the outfit. She’d won two gold medals in the Olympics, and though he had no trouble keeping up with her, he wasn’t prepared for a ten-mile run in a pair of brown loafers and tan dress pants.

He caught her eye, lit a cigarette, then turned and moved toward the street. He walked a few blocks, allowing her to follow and check for any tails he might have picked up. He felt fairly confident she wouldn’t find any, he’d lost the last one over a week ago. Once he was satisfied that she’d had ample time to check him, he stopped at a newspaper rack and bought a paper. He tucked it under his arm and looked down the crowded sidewalk.

Claire stopped, bent over to tie her shoe, then gave Danny the all clear. She turned and jogged off, heading toward the park.

Danny looked around once more, making note of who was in the area, and moved back into the stream of foot traffic. After a few blocks he was satisfied no one was tailing her either.

Claire skirted the park then stopped and did some stretching exercises, catching his eye as she did. Danny dropped his cigarette, grinding it under foot, and gave the signal that the meet was a go.

They were both clean.

Neither of them was being followed.

About Me I've done a lot of different things over the years, but I have always considered myself a writer. I have a varied career ... from blackjack dealer and pit boss to professional driver. If it has wheels, chances are I've driven it... or wrecked it. I was an over-the-road truck driver, traveling in 48 states and three provinces in Canada. I have delivered everything from bottled water to steel pipe. I have also delivered people as a motor coach operator. I grew up around demolition derby. Derby drivers are the only drivers I know who wreck their cars on purpose. I served as a Military Police woman in the Army. I mostly worked law enforcement, but I was also attached to the Personnel Security Division, PSD. This elite platoon provided security for high-ranking officers who were under active death threat. My job was to step in front of any stray bullets. At one point, our team also provided residential security for the CIA Station Chief in Frankfurt, Germany. I mostly worked uniform, but I also did some undercover assignments. Among other things, my Military Occupational Specialty and training included crime scene investigation, counterterrorism, bomb threats, and hostage situations. I have traveled extensively outside of the United States. My novel 'Sleeping With Skeletons' is available at The Wild Rose Press. There are excerpts at my website: http://www.doralynn.net and at my blog: http://dlynnkennedy.blogspot.com/ Favorite Movies Jane Eyre Pride and Prejudice What Lies Beneath Next The Illusionist Favorite Music Everything from Handlebars by Flobot to Hey There Lil Miss Riding Hood. I love music, and I love to sing and dance. Favorite Books Jane Eyre, everything by Tami Hoag, and the Stephanie Plum series.

Silly as it sounds, I haven’t ever seen both spies checking for tails before, but it’s fully understandable, of course.

Hi Joy, thanks for visiting and leaving a comment!!! I appreciate it. I was feeling a little lonely. I’m surprised you’ve never seen both spies checking for tails before. It’s how it’s really done. Thanks again! Doralynn

I really never thought about a pair doing it for each other. Usually — and I’ll openly admit I’m misguided by television :| — there’s a third ‘eye’ somewhere transmitting observations.

Hi Joy… so glad to see you back! You’re right, that certainly happens as well… but how I have it written is actually more commonplace.
