Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Growing up I used to write poetry, but I didn't attempt to write any stories until I was 24 years old. I wrote a romance novella, saved it on a floppy disk and forgot about it. Years later, I mean many, many years later, I mentioned the desire to write to my husband and he suggested that I finish the novella that I had started. Well I had no idea where that disk was, and couldn't remember much about the story, but I did have my experiences as a PI and my crazy family to draw from. And that was the beginning of My Everything.

My interest in writing originated before I knew how to form letters. My parents read to me every day or night, and I'd think of sequels to the books or use the characters in different adventures. Because paper was scarce, I did my own writing on the blank spaces in my rinted books, sometimes tearing these pieces out. Later, in grade school, I learned the joy of writing first paragraphs, then compositions and stories. I continued to read and believed my teachers who told me I had a talent for writing. By the time I was in high school, I was still reading and writing fragments of stories. I bought my first typewriter, which, incidentally, I was using when I wrote my first published books and never stopped writing.

My interest in writing grew out of my voracious appetite to read and asking myself, "What if this happened?" and letting my imagination run wild. I shared those story ideas with my grandfather, who encouraged me to write but also knew I would never Chase my dreams of writing because I was far too practical. Instead, I chased college and a career in accounting, something I was sure of making a living and supporting my family. Now I'm finally chasing those dreams.

I think that I've always loved stories -- I tend to think of myself as a storyteller more than a writer. And though I loved English literature and though one of the stories that I wrote (when we were writing stories, which wasn't often) came in second in the whole sophomore class, it did surprise me.

My interest in writing began when I was a teenager and started writing stories--never finished them, of course. I took writing courses in college and had to write assignment for those. I was also editor of the college literary magazine. Then, for some years I was too busy to write. But I got back to it when I began teaching imaginative writing for seniors in high school. In the summers I penned my first novel. |
