Grier Hadley is the illegitimate daughter of Jack Hadley, immensely wealthy gaming hell owner. Before he acknowledged her, she was a game keeper on the estate of a man who promised marriage, but ultimately decided she was not respectable enough. She is determined to become respectable now.

Sevastian Maksimi is the Crown Prince of an impoverished, and only recently, peaceful nation. He lost his elder brother and many friends in the war and is determined to marry a wealthy English aristocrat to please his grandfather, the king.

Grier and her sister are being sponsored in their seasons by Lady Bollingbrook in the hope that one of the heiresses will marry her younger grandson. The rest of the ton tend to either pity or shun the girls. Prince Sevastian is in search of a wealthy woman to eventually become queen of his country. Unsophisticated and opinionated, Grier is probably the least qualified for the position, but Sevastian is inexplicably drawn to her.

I loved this story. Grier is a heroine to admire. She has been tossed into a society she is uncomfortable with and bravely tries to please the father she has only just met. Sevastian thinks he knows what he requires in a future queen, until her realizes that despite her birth and upbringing, Grier is exactly suited to both him and his country. His cousin, Malcolm, is a bit of a puzzle and there are depths to Grier’s sister, Cleo, that have yet to be plumbed. The plot is erotically charged and exciting with some really memorable love scenes and a thrilling climax that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
