WAY OF TIDES
STEPHEN J. GORDIN
Rating: 5 Cups
Laden Riley is a simple man from the outer islands of South Carolina. He is a Vietnam vet who, after being injured in the war, returned to his simple life with his mother, his fishing, and an occasional job here and there. He is content.
Laden’s mother develops breast cancer and while taking her to receive treatment, he finds her doctor is a women he fell in love with when he was recuperating from his wounds in the war. Although she shows no sign of recognizing him, they soon are living and enjoying life and each other’s company.
While Laden struggles with the past, the loss of the man who saved his life, the one true love of his life, developers who want to ruin the land around him, and his mother’s breast cancer, he finds that no matter what the challenge, he can overcome them all and just live.
What an emotionally filled story. At times, I am not sure whether to laugh or cry. Laden’s story will touch you like none other. And how he deals with the issues that arise is just short of astounding. Very well written and exceptional characters bring this story to life. I love an author who can touch your heart with their work and Stephen J. Gordin has done just that. Kudos on a job well done Mr. Gordin.
