A warrior’s life, much like Gristle’s name, is often tough and hard to take. It is a life he knows all too well, even though there have been times that make him long for something more.
Since meeting the taciturn warrior, Wynn has the burning desire to become more than just another lost soul seeking a place to call home. He wants to learn the ways of a soldier, and who better to teach him than the best?
After losing his young friend Tristus years before, Gristle gives up on ever finding another to share his life with, until Wynn expresses a desire to become his trainee. The pony boy has much to learn. Still, Gristle finds him a very willing and able pupil. Life under Fortuna’s watchful eye, however, is bound to be fraught with boulder-sized obstacles that Wynn and Gristle are soon to encounter. Wynn’s abbreviated training is put to the ultimate test, while Gristle must once again learn to accept what life throws his way.
Most stories just give you glimpses into the characters’ pasts, but this is not the case with Gristle and Wynn. I love how each character, including Tristus, has his story told, in his own words with his own feelings, then all are brought together as their timelines converge. For me, this sets the tone for how these men came to be who they are, as well as how the rest of this series may pan out. I am thrilled to have read this from book one, and sincerely hope there are many more to come.
