With their father moving to a one room apartment in Paris, Kat and Nell are leaving behind their two sisters and going to meet their husbands-to-be in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Kat is strong and independent. Nell is a nurturer who can hardly wait to meet her fiancée.
To look at Mr. Boney Hughes, one would hardly imagine an angel. He seems to be anywhere someone needs a helping hand. Boney is there. His faith is strong and his spirit willing.
Kat and Nell arrive in Cripple Creek only to find they are completely alone in a town which has been devastated by a recent fire. Kat’s fiancée turns out to be a drunken womanizer and Nell’s is away on family business. In the outbreak of another town fire, they find their places in the community they will call home. A new doctor in town, Morgan Cutshaw, causes Kat’s head to turn while Nell’s young man returns to town, bruised and broke. Love can be the strength you need to survive a life you are not used to.
A love story set in the rugged West will get my attention every time. This one, however, was able to keep me interested as I turned each page. My favorite character had to be Kat. Such a determined young lady with a backbone of steel, yet there was a certain doctor who managed to get her ire up with each meeting. The fire between Morgan and Kat is obvious from the first. Ms. Hodgson has done a wonderful job of bringing to life the people of Cripple Creek. It is quite clear that the faith of this town is going strong.
