Lady Jane Danvers is staying at Belle Haven on Faire Isle. The year is 1588, and she has lost everything due to her faith in her religion. Now Jane must put aside her own problems when a new and much more deadly complication arises.
Louis Xavier Cheney goes by Captain Xavier and is a famous pirate, hating the name he was christened with. As the bastard son of Chevalier Louis Xavier Cheney and the court courtesan, Marguerite de Maitland, he knows what it feels like to be an outcast, especially by his own family. When the Dark Queen brings him into her chambers to hear about a legendary girl and the Book of Shadows, Xavier does what he does best -- he lies.
But fate has a way of playing with people’s lives, and Xavier not only finds himself on the Faire Isle but in close proximity to Megaera, who is also known as the Silver Rose. While on the island that is hinted to house witches, Jane finds herself falling for Xavier. As hints of war between countries are rumored, Xavier will have to choose between saving himself and saving a young girl who may be the key to unlocking the Dark Queen’s legendary ruthlessness. Once the truth comes out about who he really is, not only can it destroy those around him, it may demolish the new love between Xavier and Jane.
Full of pirates, potions, war, secrets, and a legendary land, Twilight of a Queen is a wonderful tale. Ms. Carroll uses her imagination to spin a story of how far one woman will go to reverse her age and the loss of her special abilities. The only downfall for me was parts of the story seemed as if they come from a different book and left me a little confused. Overlooking that minor detail though was not too hard, and I continued to be enticed back to Jane and Xavier’s love story. This book is a well-rounded novel that kept me on my toes and had me guessing as to what would happen next.
