Historical Holiday Romance
Rating: 3 Cups

Lady Harriet Devere is not anticipating the first holiday season since her brother was killed at Waterloo. With her parents gone and her younger twin siblings to look after, she is missing Nicholas more than ever. When two government agents ask her to look into the possibility that her brother was murdered while on assignment as a spy, Harriet is more than willing to help. She just had not expected to find her brother’s potential killer on a list of houseguests for her grandfather’s annual holiday house party.

Julius Forsythe, Earl of Marbury, has more than one motive for spending the holidays with the family of his late friend, Nicholas. What he did not expect was how fetching he would find his friend’s sister. Harriet intrigues him at every turn. Not only that, but the lady seems intent on nosing into Julius’s more secretive activities.

Harriet finds herself outmatched in a game of cat and mouse with Julius, but not outwitted. She is determined to discover the truth about the man’s clandestine behavior. Between the twins’ childish pranks, a house full of relatives enjoying the holiday season, and the sensually fascinating Earl of Marbury, Harriet is ready to tear her hair out. That is, if she does not lose her heart first.

For anyone who enjoys the holiday traditions of years past, this will be a quick and delightful read. The author seems to have put quite a lot of research into Christmas, and Yule celebrations during this time period. The characters are simple and the story easy to follow. The plot lends itself to a rather hasty conclusion, however, denying a more substantial resolution to the mystery at the heart of the story.
