Lisa Cavendish reluctantly accepts a friend’s invitation to a high school reunion. Fighting a deep-seated bitterness over the raw deal life has dealt her, she hopes she can put some of the sorrow behind her by taking a brief break from her routine.
Aaron Taylor misses his daughter terribly. He wants nothing more than to be reunited, but his ex-wife has moved on. Aaron feels stuck in a rut, and when he has an opportunity to attend his old high school reunion, he jumps at the chance, hoping it will take his mind off his worries for a couple of days.
Aaron and Lisa meet at the reunion and seem to hit it off exceptionally well. They enjoy the weekend and make plans to spend more time together during the three weeks Lisa will be in the country. That is until a spiteful remark shakes Lisa to her core.
I enjoyed this story; a very fast read. There were some amusing passages, and for the most part, the story flowed well. I was, though, quite turned-off by Lisa’s uncompromising attitude when she found out some very distressing and distasteful news from an antagonistic acquaintance. That she refused to even give Aaron a chance to defend himself left me disliking her more than I should have. While the reasons for her behavior are explained and logical, I still feel she overreacts. I like that the author seems to have a good understanding of human dynamics and the feelings of loss, betrayal and self-recrimination that many of us have faced at one time or another. The ending holds a nice little surprise and left me with hope that all might yet work out for this lonely couple.
