Historical Romance
Rating: 4 Cups

Helena is the tall and beautiful daughter of a duke. She is betrothed to her childhood sweetheart who is dragging his feet over their wedding. He is very ambitious, and his career comes before Helena.

Desmond was banished from England by his father who believed him irredeemable. He has spent his years away making his fortune and living down to his father’s expectations. The one bright spot in his memory is that of his beloved grandmother.

Desmond is now the Marquis of Waverley and must return home to England and take up his new duties. He is determined to reform his ways and no longer be the dissolute rake he was. His resolve is tried the first night when his host’s betrothed climbs into his bedchamber and into bed with him thinking that he is her fiancé. Lady Helena intrigues and tempts him, but he has to get his estate in order and redeem his character before taking a wife.

This is a very good historical romance. The characters are likable and believable. The language can be a little stilted at times, but the plot is easy to follow and difficult to put down. The author combines romance and adventure in an inventive way. The mysterious and sinister forces at work at Waverley will have you at the edge of your seat. I was rooting for Lady Helena from the first. I loved her determined attitude. She is beautiful, competent, intelligent, and very stubborn. Desmond did not stand a chance against the legendary Fairchild determination.
