Growing up a Hayden means making a living on the river no matter how much Alicia wishes otherwise. After last year’s horrible accident, it is up to her to get the family business going again, despite the grief that is tearing her apart.
As his best friend lay dying Gabe Ryder makes a promise that he will do whatever it takes to help Rob’s sister and father get back on their feet. Helping out with Hayden River Adventures is the least he can do for Rob, and yet Gabe is in no way ready to face Alicia again.
Alicia feels like she lost part of her soul when her twin brother Rob is killed in action, so having Gabe show up on her doorstep is almost more than she can take. Their brief affair three years ago left a lasting impression, one that Alicia is in no shape to handle with everything else going on in her life. Gabe can see how hard Alicia is working to keep her son and father from knowing just how bad things have gotten for the family business, making him want her all the more. He knows he is the farthest thing from the husband and father material that Alicia needs, which is breaking Gabe’s heart a little more every day.
Alicia’s love for her family is the focus of everything she does, no matter how young and naïve she may be. It is painfully obvious that her heart is cracking for a lost brother, a father who is slipping into depression, and a son who needs a loving and lasting man in his life. I like that fact that Gabe is not passed off as an instant “Daddy”, and that he really struggles to be there for Alicia despite her antipathy. The reader gets a real appreciation for the hurdles they must personally overcome before they can even begin to think of a relationship.
