Becoming Chief of Police in Mendenhall has not been the peaceful stress free position Kate Williams expected. The town itself is exactly what she hopes for. Unfortunately, her biggest problems seem to lie within her own office.
Angry and disappointed do not even come close to how Deputy Chief Rob McKell feels about being passed over for the chief’s position. He knows it is not right to blame the woman herself, but rationality is beyond his capabilities right now.
Kate cannot believe she has been put in the position of organizing an event as huge as the area's cop games, but finding out that none of her staff is supporting her hurts even more. Her busy schedule, however, does not stop her from becoming involved in the disappearance of a young boy. With the help of one of her rookies, Kate delves right into the case. Kate knows her eyewitness is nowhere near reliable. Still something about his story unleashes the demons she has carried around for thirty years. Knowing Rob has heard of her past, she fears it will only be a matter of time before her entire staff will turn their back on her.
You really have to admire a woman like Kate. This author imbues her character with just the right amount of grit and determination. I also like that she is a mature woman whose intelligence and strength are in equal proportion. At the same time, she is honestly caring and supportive. It is great to see a character that breaks the mold of twenty-something bombshells or over the top GI Janes. In my opinion, Ms. Dubé has created a fantastic and realistic heroine. I, for one, will love to read more.
