A Highland Guard Novel
Mass Market Paperback
Rating: 4 Cups
Annie Mac Dougall is the daughter of a Highland Chief loyal to King Edward. She is intelligent, beautiful and has a great zest for life. She is so sick of war and the losses it brings and wishes for peace.
Arthur Campbell is also known as Ranger among the Highland Guard. He is loyal to Robert the Bruce and is spying for him in the midst of Edward’s followers. His skills as a spy are eerie, and he is very effective.
The war for control of Scotland has been going on a very long time but Robert the Bruce is finally making some headway thanks in no small part to his very talented spy, Arthur Campbell. He needs Arthur to give him information on the movements and plans of John MacDougall. Arthur is happy to take part in the downfall of the coward who murdered his father until he meets MacDougall’s daughter Annie. Annie is the apple of her beloved father’s eye and is wishing for an end to this interminable war. Their loyalties will be tested as they fall in love.
This is a well-written story that takes place during a very exciting time in history. The author brings some well known historical figures to life as well as the ones she invented for her story. Historical fact and fiction blend seamlessly in a story full of action, war, and love. Arthur and Annie are well developed and unique characters. Annie is outspoken, practical and cheerful in a very trying time. Arthur is the perfect spy with his unusual abilities and his gift for blending into the shadows. I liked that he could never hide from Annie. This is an interesting and turbulent time and a perfect setting for this gripping story.
