Hugo Emes, Lord Trentham, is going back for a visit to Penderris, where seven members of the club have spent much time recuperating from the perils of war, healing both psychically and mentally. He is mourning the death of his father, confused about the responsibilities of his father’s business and the guardianship of his younger stepsister.
Gwen, Lady Muir, is the widowed sister of Neville, Earl of Kilbourne. She is in mourning over the death of her husband and child in a horrible riding accident. Still she thinks her life is relatively happy, until she visits a friend who has also lost her husband recently. All of a sudden, she realizes only loneliness surrounds her.
A chance meeting between Hugo and Gwen on a secluded beach and his rescuing Gwen and her sprained ankle from the rocks will begin a frustrating relationship with underlying sparks. Being from different social circles, they wonder if they should break out of their worlds’ safety to find maybe a chance at love. But what if their worlds are just too different?
As Hugo says, one should not try to plan one’s future because it may all change in a heartbeat with unexpected results. I love when a couple so opposite can love and survive no matter what society has to say. Gwen and Hugo prove it so well. I am sure the rest of the series will be just as entertaining as the first book. The Proposal is a great read for historical romance fans.
