In the grand scheme of things, a young witch in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is pretty low on the magic ladder, but Emily Edwards likes her quiet unassuming life. Times are tough though, and one little mistake to make life easier for her Pap has Emily’s world crashing down around her.
Being shuffled off to a backwoods little town like Lost Pine is exactly what Dreadnought Stanton knows he deserves, but discovering the town’s little witch is both a blessing and a curse.
An accident at a mining camp outside of town sends Emily and Mr. Stanton on a run for their lives. Neither of them have ever seen anything like the stone that imbedded itself in Emily’s hand, but the power it holds is undeniable. Their only hope is to reach Professor Mirabilis in New York, but making it there alive is proving to be quite a challenge. Everyone wants possession of the stone, and the only thing standing between Emily and certain death is a warlock she is not sure if she wants to kiss or clobber.
Prepare for a hair-raising cross-country adventure full of malevolent beasts, wicked warlocks, and a mostly antagonistic but tender budding relationship. Emily’s character is rather brash and oftentimes immature, but her good heart always shines through in the end. I find it harder to get a lock on Mr. Stanton’s true personality, but his quiet fortitude and perseverance to keep Emily safe makes him a very intriguing and intense character. With so many twists, turns, and “squinks” it is hard to know who to trust and what to believe, but one thing is certain, this story is not over yet.
