Deedra Masefield is a journalist with the Rufus newspaper. She is determined to only show her tough side to the world at large, but once again, this looks like it will be an impossible feat.
Aaron Blaine was the sheriff in Rufus County and Deedra’s intended fiancée. However, he had secrets that he was not sharing with anyone. A secret that lead someone to kill him at the Brockton court house.
Deedra is devastated by Aaron’s murder. The political figures in Brockton believe it was a case of mistaken identity, but Deedra knows the killer had the right man. It is up to her and a few of her friends to find out why. The letter Aaron left behind may be the key to tie it all up with a bow, but the killer is out to silence whoever gets too close to the truth, including a twelve year old boy who is found dead under the Midnight Tree. Will Deedra be another victim or will she solve the case?
There are so many secrets to unravel as the reader wades through the knots, but that only enhances the reading experience. I often felt as if I were walking through the case side by side with Deedra. Ms. Kliewer has incredible way of drawing the reader into the mystery and leading them through Deedra’s world. The suspense was the hardest thing about this book. I discovered I was holding my breath quite often throughout the story. Only when I found myself drifting off to sleep at night did I put the book aside. The next morning, I would anxiously await the moment I could return to my sleuthing.
