Since she was twelve years old, Portia Townsend knew that one man and one man only was for her. But he was years older than her in both his age and the life he has known.

Gareth Lowell considers Portia to be one of his dearest friends. When he sees her as a young lady, he cannot understand how she grew up so fast.

After Gareth made the mistake of treating Portia like a kid, she found her tender heart nearly broken in two. Determined to forget her childhood friend, she goes out of her way to forget the pain, but years later she will have to ask for his help when dealing with her ex-husband. Gareth is furious that someone would put Portia into so much danger, and her snake of an ex will get his comeuppance if he has anything to say about it. The only way to give her a safe place to live is to do something quite drastic, which leads the two childhood friends into unknown territory…each others’ arms.

When I first started reading The Devil She Knows, the way the story jumped quickly from one topic to another was a little confusing. But once the story got more in depth, the tale flowed quite beautifully and it was easier for me to understand. Ms. Whiteside sure knows how to make a reader crave more as the tension and danger crackled and poured from the pages. The delicate dance needed for all the court intrigue in Constantinople will have your head spinning. What a great tale this was!
