THE COUNTERFEIT BRIDE
NANCY J. PARRA
Rating: 4 Cups
Lillian Picken is an orphan. She is small, red-haired and curvy. She is posing as a woman with an absent husband to make her dream of having her own business come true.
Patrick Donovan is a widower and a Secret Service Agent. He is tall, handsome, and has a charming way about him.
Lillian is living her dream of having a successful business. She owns a general store in the mining town of Silverton. Everyone appears to believe her story of a husband away in the service of his country, so she is the only one surprised when he actually comes to town. Patrick is investigating a ring of counterfeiters and, at first, suspects Lillian of being involved. Her innocence is soon proved but, he cannot leave without exposing the lies that both of them have told. That is not the only reason he does not want to leave.
This is a fast moving and gripping story that caught me from the first chapter. The characters are vividly portrayed, the dialogue is clever and realistic, and the plot is well written with some really suspenseful moments. Lillian and Donovan have great chemistry and the romantic tension is excellently portrayed. The small town of Silverton and its inhabitants are easily pictured, and the author has a great gift for bringing them all to life. This is an excellent tale of the Old West.
