Rating: 4 Cups
To the Devil, humanity is nothing but a game on a playing board that encompasses the world. He often enjoys tormenting those who hover on the line between the light and the dark. Usually the human falls and the Devil gains another soul. When the Devil loses, he has eternity to harass the descendants of the one that got away.
Lee Fontana is up for parole and glad of it. If only he could stop seeing and hearing the ghostly images that terrify him and give him ideas of pulling one last job. Deep down Lee knows the shadowy image haunting him is the same one that came to his granddad the famous train robber. The world has changed in the years Lee spent in prison and he cannot be sure he will ever find a way to find into this new one.
Misto the ghost cat knows what the Devil is up to and intends to put a stop to it. He has been with Lee through several of his earthly lives. Misto believes the old man deserves a shot at peaceful retirement. As the Devil spins his plot, the wily cat begins to realize that the three of them are more interconnected through time and the unseen world than any might imagine.
This whimsical mystery is set in post World War II America. Even those who do not like cats will love Misto. The story is cleverly wound between the lush descriptions to draw the reader deeper. Though it is just a little slow in the beginning, readers will be glad they hung on to the end.
