Sophie Darshaw is a seamstress formerly employed at a brothel. Despite her previous employment, she is an innocent in many ways. She is very beautiful and an orphan.

Lord Lindley is a very attractive earl. A tragic loss in his past has led him to his present employment. He secretly works for the government and is trying to bring traitors and murderers to justice.

Sophie's employment as a maid for Mr. Fitzgelder is proving more arduous than she anticipated. She only took the position as a stepping stone to something more respectable, but her employer is even more debauched than anyone at Madame Eudora’s brothel. She is barely able to hold onto her virtue, and is forced to run away. Lord Lindley is searching for the murderer of his family and thinks that Sophie is connected to the culprit, in spite of his attraction to her. He chases after her and the two have a perilous adventure.

I enjoyed this story and its exciting plot. The characters are well-written and easy to picture. The story line is gripping with some really interesting twists and turns. I did have a few problems with the story. The familial relations between several of the characters are so convoluted that I am still a bit confused. There are also a few loose ends that appear to be connected with other books or novellas that are not adequately explained in this novel. I also disliked the heroine’s father. His actions were inexcusable and really did not improve with time. Despite a few flaws, this is a very enjoyable novel.
