Rana comes from Teles, where her people are born with the ability to read other’s emotions. She and Willis, an Earther, are visiting an unpopulated planet with the hopes of colonizing it. She reads Willis’ aura and can tell he is dealing with a lot of emotional pain. She wants to help him, but he does not understand her gift and spends more time trying to drive her away by being hostile towards her.
Willis just wants to go back to the ship. He is completely uncomfortable with Rana’s ability, which he perceives as reading his mind no matter how many times she tells him otherwise. Unwilling to allow Rana close, no matter how attracted he is to her, the trip has become miserable for both of them.
Things begin to change when Rana drinks the water. When Willis also drinks some they begin having wonderful experiences, including great sex. It is only when some form of consciousness, which only Rana can feel, begins attempting to help heal Willis that he finds he must make a choice. Stay on the planet and continue their exploration, or give up on it all together and return to the ship.
As science fiction stories go, this one is now at the top of my favorites list. Imaginative and well written, I was impressed with Ms. Gaines’ descriptions of the planet, and her portrayal of the characters, who were so well drawn emotionally anyone could relate to them. The psychic elements were real and believable, and the world building was outstanding. If you enjoy science fiction and romance, then this is the book for you!
