No one can accurately predict what effects mental illness will have on a family, but for Stevie Barrett the pain and anguish of a mentally disturbed mother manifested itself through food. She nearly ate herself to death before finding the strength to fight for a life that she was always too afraid to embrace.
A beautiful young woman with the voice of an angel has become a prisoner of her own mind, but Helen is not the only one to suffer. Her schizophrenia rains chaos down on her two young daughters and elderly parents, who all try valiantly to love and protect their precious Helen.
The guilt of not being able to save her baby sister encapsulated Stevie in layers upon layers of fat until her body could just not handle to burden any longer. After undergoing two surgeries; one to band off most of her stomach, and the other to remove pounds of excess skin, Stevie is finally seeing the woman she fears and longs to become. Every day she is grateful to be alive; to be able to walk, garden, and rebuild chairs, but the pain of her past waits for her every night. Stevie’s relationships with her cousins, her co-workers, and eventually Jack are priceless, but working through her feelings for Helen will require strength, determination, plenty of tears, and a multitude of chairs.
This story is like one of those days where the sun shines through the rain and the most glorious rainbow glows so bright that you just know the day is going to be wondrous. It is laughing through your tears and hanging on to the hope that for one magical moment all is right in the world, and for me Stevie embodies that feeling. She endures the most horrific losses as a young child, but continues to brighten the lives of those around her, especially with the support of her close friends and family. I fully believe every one of the stories told throughout this book will have an impact on your heart, and should be savored and shared with all of your friends.
