Liam O’Brien left his family and their pub in New York after the Irish Mob decided he needed to pay with his life. Feeling homesick, but determined to wait it out, he has been working at the local pub in the small village of Ballycraig in Ireland.

The last year has been hard on Aislinn McCafferty with her fiancé deciding to tell her at the altar that he was gay, followed by her parents’ death six months later. After one too many torments in life, she has taken to having a vicious tongue that cuts to the quick whenever someone even looks at her wrong.

Stepping into Royal Oak, the pub owned by Old Jack and bartended by Liam, Aislinn can see why the women are gushing about him. But since she is immune to men and their smarmy charms, she saunters in and gives him a tongue-lashing like none other. Liam knows that underneath that tough-as-nails exterior is just a coating for the softer woman underneath, and he is determined to discover just how soft she is. Can he get her to open up and fall for him without revealing the little tawdry wager he made about the whole thing?

I absolutely and completely fell in love with Straight Up! I found Aislinn to be a courageous woman who knows how to put a man in his place and even have him quivering in fear. Liam’s growth from egotistical jerk to a man who falls in love was a beautiful sight to see. Ms. Martin continues to spin a web of Irish tale and romance with unique characters that have you wanting to visit Ireland to see if such people really do exist. What an outstanding novel; one that will have you quickly turning pages and staying up late just to see what is in store for these two hot-tempered characters.
