Barely making rent in a place like New York is no fun for an adventurer at heart like Lily Lin, but when she learns that an unknown aunt has left her three million dollars, she fears it is too good to be true. There is just one little catch: she needs to go to China for six months and retrace her aunt’s route along the Silk Road, including a few tasks to complete along the way.
At twenty one and a graduate student of East Asian Studies at Columbia University Alex Luce is on the cusp of a life changing encounter. He came to China to feed his desire to know his heritage, but instead finds a beautiful Chinese woman who steals his heart.
When Lily left New York, she was ready to set off on an adventure of a lifetime, and distance herself from a rather uncomfortable relationship with a married man, but finding a man to replace him is not on her agenda. Alex is so sweet, and Lily admits to herself that she is very much attracted to the younger man, but the more she tries to discourage him, the more tenacious he becomes. As Alex comes in and out of her life, Lily’s journey comes to a close, but the greatest revelation of her trip is about to be disclosed, and Lily is in no way prepared for the shock coming her way. Will Lily come out of China a very rich woman, or will she come out at all, and will Alex find a way to fit into her life, or be left behind like so much sand sifting through the cracks?
Lily is a character with a multi-faceted personality, and when you think you may have her pegged, she does something that completely throws you off. She can be selfish and cruel in one breath, and then crying tears of joy the next. I find her screaming at people, whether it is in anger or surprise, just annoying, and Lily has a very hard time ever holding her tongue or her temper. Alex’s maturity and strength of character levels out Lily’s emotional upheavals, and it is this balance not only with him, but others that she encounters along the way that I find most appealing in this story.
