Rating: 5 Cups
Darlene O’Hara is a detective for the Seventh Precinct. She is also a single mother whose son is currently enrolled at University of Washington, a drinker, and a woman who has led a wild life.
Francesca Pena seems to have it all going for her as a rising star among her classmates, a volunteer, and a teen that made it out of the streets fairly clean. Why then was she tortured, raped, and murdered?
This is the question that Detective O’Hara keeps pondering as she tries to piece the clues together. As one day melts into another, Darlene and her partner Krekorian continue to follow leads that have them finding one shocking secret after another. Soon a picture is being painted of a girl who is not some sweet volunteer from the wrong side of the tracks but of a woman who had everyone fooled. Can O’Hara solve the mystery of who murdered Pena before she loses her career permanently?
Shadows Still Remain is a twisted novel full of suspense and graphic scenarios that will have every parent clutching their child closer to them. Peter De Jonge shows the reader not only the seedier side of crime, but how it affects the cops as they unwind the complicated and intricate details of how the offense was committed. Darlene is painted as this beautiful woman who is determined to solve this case, even as she is told repeatedly to lay off and leave it to the senior homicide detective. This gives the reader an almost hero worship attitude toward her character as she continuously ignores protocol and goes after the bad guy. I can only hope this is not the last time we have seen Detective Darlene O’Hara or her less than sterling antics.
