Six years previously Special Agent Ian M. Prestwick took medical retirement from the FBI. For the past five years, he has resided in Wilton Falls, New York, where he teaches high school history. Now known as Matthew Prestwick, his past with the FBI is a well-kept secret. At last, Matthew feels like the demons that have haunted him have been exorcised and he is finally content.
Aileen Drew is the local librarian. She has lived next door to Matthew for five years and has been his good friend. Matthew is oblivious to the fact that Aileen actually is in love with him. When Matthew is injured in an incident, the relationship between Aileen and Matthew changes as he belatedly realizes how very dear she has become to him.
Just as Aileen and Matthew discover their deeper feelings for each other, Matthew learns that Morris Duncan, a crooked detective, has been released after a 15 year prison stint. Duncan blames Agent Prestwick for ruining his life and is out for revenge. Duncan is prepared to go to any extremes to make Prestwick suffer.
This is an exciting book. When I was forced to put it down, I just wanted to hurry up and do what I had to do quickly so that I could get back to the story. Wilton Falls is an Idyllic, small, close-knit community populated with characters that I came to care about. The conversations are believable and I feel that the numerous characters are portrayed with realistic traits; they interact well together. I also love the description of the old, abandoned lighthouse and appreciated that several important segments of the book took place there. If you enjoy romantic suspense, filled with memorable characters, this is a must read.
