SHADOWS OF ECSTASY
Whiskey Creek Press Torrid
Erotic Romance; Suspense
Rating: 4 Cups
When Emma Lake was in college, she had an intense secret affair with her father’s enemy’s son. Leaving him was the hardest thing she had ever done, and to this day, she wonders if she made the right choice.
Cal Rutledge should have known that being with Emma was a temporary thing when she wanted to keep their affair quiet. After she broke his heart, he was determined to forget about her, but he never has.
Emma is back after a nasty divorce left her with too many regrets and a family who thinks leaving her cheating-thieving husband was a bad thing. Seeing Cal again has brought back all of the passionate escapades they had in school, and before she knows it, they have started up again. But this time their secret affair may not stay secret for too long because someone is plotting to eliminate the competition, anyway she has to.
Shadows of Ecstasy is a tale that starts off hot and continues down that path throughout the novel. This modern day Romeo & Juliet meets politics is both tantalizing and sad as we see Emma and Cal try to find their way toward each other even as their own families try to manipulate them and control them. Between the scenes of Emma trying to come to terms with who she is, fighting to keep her sister from spiraling completely down a path of self-destruction, Cal’s anger towards his father for using his mother’s battle with cancer as a stepping stone in his campaign, and his continuous struggles to not become like his father as he sees where his brother is going in life, you cannot help but feel as if you are reading a soap opera that could very well be a part of some politician’s life. It was hard for me to see how a grown person could not stand up to her own father, no matter how powerful he seemed to be, and I was much happier when Emma finally understood where she stood in her family’s eyes, and when she finally realized how she wanted to live her life. Ms. Hart has written a compelling story that will keep you glued to the pages as you watch these two dynamic characters fight and struggle to find each other in a sea of opposition and politics.
Caution: This tale contains scenes in which you will find yourself wanting to reach in the computer and strangle a couple of hard-headed knuckleheads!
