Sophie Stanton is thin with auburn hair and spectacles. She has been out for four seasons and is no great beauty. She has loved only one man, but she is too impulsive and not beautiful enough for him.
Simon, Earl of Trask, is everything an earl should be. He is rich, handsome, and respectful of the proprieties. Any young miss would be ecstatic to get a proposal from him.
The Earl of Trask needs a ready supply of coal to further his business interests. Part of his childhood friend Sophie Stanton’s dowry is land rich with coal. Simon is ready to get married and since Sophie has always been in love with him, he is confident that he can mold her into the countess he needs. Sophie has never been malleable, and her sense of right and wrong often overrides her common sense. The fate of two young children is uppermost in Sophie’s thoughts right now, and she is determined to help them despite the threat of scandal and her would-be fiancé.
I loved Sophie’s character from the very beginning of the book. She is intelligent, empathetic to the plights and feelings of others, and considerate of her hostesses. She is also witty and unafraid to speak her mind. Simon, on the other hand, is much harder to like. His overbearing attitude towards Sophie and inconsiderate and selfish attitude make him less than sympathetic. He makes up for it by protecting her from various villains, but should have been a little more observant of the behavior of his ex-mistress. The plot is lively with a lot of action and some very good love scenes. I was at the edge of my seat to see what would happen to Becky and Toby. This is a very good romance that fans of the historical/regency genre are going to love.
