Hannah Robinson’s life is about to get more complicated than it already is. While getting ready for a dinner party to celebrate her soon to be open cupcake business, her boyfriend of over a year informs her that he has met someone else.
Adam is Hannah’s best friend and he knows that she is crushed by her ex-boyfriend’s infidelity. He tells Hannah to give her business seven months to become solvent before she starts to freak out about her choosing to open a business during these trying times.
As Hannah’s business opens and she starts to learn what works and what does not, new and interesting people come into her and Adam’s lives. There is the mysterious John Wyatt who seems to want more than just cupcakes, but he does not know how to broach the subject. Then there is the quiet woman who has a passion for music that takes Adam’s breath away and has him going to the extreme to get to know her. When the seventh month hits, will Hannah’s life be fuller and happier than it was on the day Cupcakes on the Corner opened its doors?
Ms. Meaney’s novel has a basis of realism, romance, and intriguing characters to help make her story interesting. I like the way that Hannah and Adam come across as such strong characters who help each other out in their times of need. I did wish that the storyline between Hannah and John could have been more detailed since their lives interact with one another and it has a major impact on the overall tale. The emotional pitfalls that Hannah struggles with as she starts her new business and tries to put her relationship with her ex behind her, did add a greater quality to the novel. Semi-Sweet is a tale that will leave you pleasantly surprised as the many different characters throughout this book wrestle with the many obstacles that affect their lives.
