SECRETS OF THE TUDOR COURT
Rating: 4 Cups
Mary Howard is the younger daughter of the Duke of Norfolk. She sees little of her parents, but has a loving nursemaid. She is destined to be a pawn in her father’s quest for power.
Thomas, Duke of Norfolk is a man determined to be as powerful as the king. He uses his family to accomplish this whenever possible. He is a cold man and can be cruel and violent, especially to his long suffering wife.
Mary Howard, the Duchess of Richmond is the wife of Henry VIII’s illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy. The daughter of the powerful and ambitious Duke of Norfolk, she grows up in the Court as an attendant to Anne Boleyn. She is a little known figure of history, but she plays an important part in this time as the unwilling puppet of her father.
Ms. Bogdan has done a masterful job of describing life in the Tudor court. She paints a picture that will enable the reader to step right into the era with the characters. She has also brought to life some famous and not so famous historical figures and made them quite real. Mary did not live an easy life and always yearned for someone to love her. Her father was the only real constant in her life and she always strove for his approval. She was constantly disappointed. She led an interesting if sad life and I am happy that the author plucked her out of obscurity to be the subject of this very good novel.
