As Hand-to-Be for Queen Sureya, Lady Solstice is the envy of the Temple Virgins. Her training and excellence as a chosen Virgin for She Who Listens, ranks her among the highest of the Queen’s maidens.
The years of crossing deserts in search of slavers is a dedication few can understand, but for Lord Axel de la Couere it is one of duty. His brother was taken into slavery, and Axel is prepared to run to ground every last slaver until he frees him.
Solstice will do everything, including being banished from Marotiri, if it will mean saving her Queen, and she can only do this if she can get to Greenhaven. She never imagined Axel coming back into her life, let alone at a time when she is fighting for a Queen and a goddess he truly despises. Axel felt the sting of betrayal years ago when Solstice left him for a life of lust and degradation amongst the followers of She Who Listens, but he never forgot her. Now it is up to him to safely escort her to Greenhaven, and by any God or Goddess who will listen, he will not fail her.
Prejudice, pride, and power create a volatile situation for the characters in this story. The extremes in religion and race are so clearly defined that it is easy to recognize the agonies that Axel and Solstice must face. However they must overcome differences so vast to be together, right down to the most basic core values, that it is hard to understand how they would ever be fully compatible. They fight, they love, and through it all the reader is entranced by the beauty of their devotion.
