Danielle Parkman is a typical mother who only wants the best for her son, Max. She works hard as a lawyer to make sure he has the best doctors she can afford. She has dedicated her life to her son, at the risk of losing everything else.
Max Parkman is a sixteen-year-old who is living with Asperger’s, a high-functioning form of autism. He is extremely bright, but lately, he has been spinning out of control. He refuses to discuss problems with his mom, is using drugs and reacting violently toward her.
Danielle is at the end of her rope. Talking to Max’s therapist, she decides to take his recommendation and takes Max to Maitland Psychiatric Asylum in Iowa for an evaluation by some of the top doctors in the country. Throughout the evaluation process, Danielle notices things that just do not seem right to her. Max is getting worse instead of better and he is becoming even more agitated. Enough so, that he lashes out at another patient, Jonas Morrison. With all of the medications Max is taking, he has a hard time remaining coherent. Now, Jonas has been murdered and all signs point to Max. It is up to Danielle and her lawyer to prove Max’s innocence.
This is not a traditional love story. Instead, it is a story about the love between a mother and her son. The dedication Danielle shows to her son and the persistence of his innocence gives me a case of the warm fuzzies. The emotions are raw and at the surface throughout most of the book. There were times when I put the book down and walked outside. The author writes with such intensity that the reader becomes involved in the events that take place between the covers. I stand and applaud Ms. Van Heugten for writing a book that melts my heart while tearing at my heartstrings. My biggest suggestion would be to make sure you have tissues at hand as you read this book. It is an incredible read!
