Love is really not a concept that Chessa Putnam is too familiar with considering she had virtually none growing up, so what she is feeling right now is completely freaky. Every moment feels like she is one step closer to losing the best thing she has ever experienced.
There is one thing Terrible knows, and that is pain. He is really good at giving it, and since knowing Chessa he is getting a good idea what it feels like.
The closest Chessa has ever come to a feeling of security and safety is with the Church, but now she is starting to feel that same thing with Terrible, and it is seriously scaring her. She has a real propensity for screwing things up, but messing up with Terrible will sink her deeper than any pill could ever compensate. Too much stuff is coming down in Chessa and Terrible’s world to concentrate on each other, and someone out there is about to make it a whole lot worse. Banishing ghosts are one thing, but screwing with the Earth’s power is on a level that even a Debunker like Chessa may not be able to stop.
Chessa may feel like she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders, but I get the sense that this is what makes her feel like she really matters. Her addiction is really hard to take however, and even when it almost costs her everything, she continues to feed it. I could just as easily get into this story and its characters without all of the drugs, and in my opinion it would still be a fabulous read. This is a step out of the ordinary, and if you like a bit of an edge to your characters and plots this is well worth your time.
