Allegra is a high school teacher. Her class is comprised of misfits and the occasional felon. Her grandmother is a sexual surrogate for senior citizens. She is divorced from an abusive man and lives with her grandmother and aunt.

Sloan is a DEA agent working to bust a drug ring in Allegra’s home town. He is attracted to the feisty teacher and fascinated with her family despite their interference in his investigation.

Allegra and Sloan’s paths keep crossing. First he kidnaps her, forcing her to stand up the most eligible bachelor in town, and then one of her students, Sara, goes missing. Sara’s father is a big time drug dealer in town. Allegra is determined to find Sara with or without the arrogant but sexy DEA agent’s help.

This story will have you laughing one minute and at the edge of your seat in suspense the next. Allegra is a great character, strong and quirky. Sloan is harder to get a feel for, but the mystery makes him more intriguing. The plot is involved but engrossing, and the other characters range from boringly average to totally bizarre. I loved Sybil, the grandmother, and Aunt Dodie. and their attempts to improve Allegra’s life. The zany plot is full of humor and pathos, and I did not want the story to end.
