Laying down her life for Simone is something Emma Donahoe would do in the blink of an eye, and yet she is terrified that there is a dark and deadly presence lurking in her soul. The dreams are coming more often, and each is more horrifying than the last.
With his strength waning, John Chen does his best to prepare everyone for his departure. Simone’s safety is paramount, but leaving Emma is every bit as hard as not being there to watch his daughter grow up.
If the demons do not eventually kill her, Emma is pretty sure getting her thesis finished will. Between caring for Simone, teaching and working on her MBA, Emma is nearing her breaking point, but even that is nothing compared to the thought of losing John. He has lost so much, and is hanging on as long as he can, but Emma can clearly see what it is costing him. Emma’s progress is remarkably and quite inhumanly fast, but that is nothing compared to Simone, who is leaving behind her six-year-old self, for a destiny that has everyone guessing.
There are very few books that I would love to see made into a movie, but this series is definitely on that list. The visuals created by this author are extraordinary, and her characters practically leap from the pages. The sights, sounds and smells of a bustling city, combined with a plethora of amazingly vibrant creatures, really ignite your imagination. I highly recommend reading these in order, and cannot wait for book three.
