Life is going well for Christine Beckett. She has finally made partner in a law firm and has purchased her very own townhouse in New York City. Until, she hears a little girl’s cries of help from the unit next door, and receives threatening letters in the mail. Though she does not want to admit it, she knows Detective David Solomon can help.
Family friend Detective Solomon is trying his best to keep Christine safe and fight his growing attraction towards her. It would not do to get involved with a client, especially since he needs to be on his toes as the threats against her grow worse. David suspects another case, the murder of young mother Mona Olson is connected to the mysterious letters Christine is receiving; he just has to figure out how.
While their mutual desire develops, the cries in the night grow worse and the threatening letters more frequent. David and Christine must now use their wits to stay one step ahead of the game, before the threats become reality.
Quiet ratchets up the suspense as several plot lines twist and turn together. There are times however, where frequent character point of view changes, odd phrasing and stilted language do not contribute well to the overall flow of the book. Also, the motives of some characters were slightly confusing. Overall though, the mystery and romance will keep the reader turning the pages.
