Science is cold hard facts; you take tests, and you determine results, no emotions involved, and that is the only thing that has kept Callista MacBride from losing her mind. She could have so easily slipped into a bottomless pit of misery and grief after her loss, but thankfully her job as a forensic expert keeps her too busy to feel.
The last three years without Callie have been hell for FBI agent, Tom Ryan, and he has only himself to blame. He walked away and never looked back, but the regret has been a knife in his gut ever since.
Never did she want to hear that voice or see those eyes again, but Callie cannot block out either with Tom doing guard duty once again. She never stopped loving him, but resentment and anger are the only feelings she will allow herself now. Her life is being torn apart by a killer who seems to have made her his next target, by an FBI agent who shattered her heart, and a secret so painful it left a scar on her soul. The change in Callie is a haunting reminder to Tom that he hurt her beyond repair, but he cannot and will not give up without trying one more time to have her in his life, this time for good.
Emotions run rampant throughout this story, and you cannot help but be pulled into its wake. Callie seethes with anger, and at times this makes it hard to really feel for her character. Tom has his own faults, but his honesty is refreshing and heartfelt. They both bear the pain and scars of their actions, and their story is remarkably well written and candid. This book in the Kenner County Crime Unit series brings you one step closer to a killer, but two steps back in knowing his identity, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
