It was not supposed to happen the way it did, but at the very young age of twenty, Jared suddenly became the head of his father’s construction company. He had no choice but to leave behind not only college but his youth as well.
The teen years are never easy, but for someone like Alex they can be especially hard. His best friend Clark is cool about Alex being gay, but what he really wants, he is nowhere near ready for.
Almost five years is not a long time, but when you are talking the ages between an adult and a minor, it is a lifetime. Jared admires the strength it took Alex to approach him, but to allow anything other than a friendship, is just not acceptable. Jared does not dare dream of someday, but thank goodness Alex dares enough for both of them. He has his heart set on Jared, and despite Jared’s rules, he knows the feelings are mutual.
Ms. Adams has created a beautifully written story of young love, and the growing pains it must go through to blossom. It is hard to fathom the courage these young men must have to face society’s bigotry, but Alex and Jared do it with integrity. I especially love the chapter involving Jared and Alex’s father, as it brings into sharp focus the love these two men have for Alex. Jared is wise beyond his years, and though their relationship starts so young, it is amazing to see their constraint and maturity.
