ONCE UPON A LOVE
Hearts on Fire Books
Rating: 4 Cups
Amanda is on the run from her overbearing brother and his plans to marry her off to his employer. She is trained in accounting and had expected to work in her late father’s business until her brother convinced the dying man to change his will.
Jake is a small business owner in California. He is waiting for the arrival of his late brother’s children. He does not know them but feels responsible for them and has hired a nursemaid to accompany them on the long journey, but they are late.
A young woman escaping an unfortunate marriage rescues three youngsters on their way to live with their uncle in California. When the detectives that her brother hired find her at her destination, she is forced to claim that she is the children’s mother. Jake, the uncle, hires her to care for the children, a perfect way to hide until the detectives and her brother find her once again.
I really enjoyed this story. Amanda has a big heart and is very intelligent as her success as an accountant shows. Jake is bitter about just about everything but that changes as he learns more about Amanda and his family. His inability to read or accept help due to stubborn pride leads to some interesting situations. The shopkeeper’s daughter and her designs on Jake makes an amusing subplot. This story is a nice combination of a romance and a young woman’s struggle to make her own way in the world. The setting of post Civil War California lends itself well to the story.
