Tess is about to be divorced from her police officer husband. She is a baker with a thriving business and puts all of her time into it. She is still very affected by the loss of a baby.
Alex is a very dedicated police officer, too dedicated according to his soon to be ex-wife. He is devastated by the upcoming divorce but is unwilling to change his habits, working even harder now than he did before.
Days before their divorce is to be finalized, Tess learns that Alex has been shot in the line of duty. She puts the divorce on hold and takes him in for his recovery. The two rediscover their love for each other, but Alex’s inability to remember who shot him and acts of vandalism on their home and attacks on Tess add to the uncertainty of their lives and relationship.
The author tells a very realistic story of a marriage in trouble. Alex puts his job first, even over his family, and Tess could not be expected to play second fiddle forever, especially when she lost their child alone in the hospital while Alex was at work. The breakdown of the marriage was inevitable. Ms. Cullen tells a wonderful story of the couple working out their differences and a suspense tale that had me enthralled. I never suspected the villain until the end due to a well-crafted plot. The author has a very good understanding of the stresses involved in a police officer’s family, particularly their workaholic tendencies, weird hours, and the stress that makes the divorce rate so very high.
