NEVER HAD A DREAM COME TRUE
The Royal Family, Book 2
The Wild Rose Press
Rating: 4 Cups
Lady Penelope DeVere is the younger daughter of an impoverished Earl. She is bookish and not as beautiful as her older sister, so she is ignored for the most part by her family. She spends as much time as possible with her best friend Francesca and the Darling family.
Lord Richard Darling is also known as Rake, a name that suits him well. He is charming and handsome and the younger son of a duke, and quite a favorite with the ladies of the Ton.
Penny has always been in love with Rake, much to the amusement of her best friend, his sister Francesca. She has always been unloved and ignored in her own home, so she finally has given up the fantasy of Rake for the practicality of finding someone who can love her for herself, but suddenly Rake is very interested in her. She thinks he wants to make her his mistress, which is tempting, but not possible. Rake is determined to win her over despite the obstacles she and her family throw in his way.
It has been a long time since a Regency has grabbed my attention and held it like this novel; probably since I read the last book of this series. The characters are interesting and charismatic and the romance has just enough spice to keep a modern reader’s interest without straying from the genre. Rake and Penny are so very different from each other that misunderstandings abound, making this novel even more fun to read. I love the Darling family and cannot wait to read about the next sibling’s adventures in love.
