The day he was released from prison was the happiest day of Sam O’Brien’s life, until reality came crashing down on him. Despite his overturned conviction, Sam would forever be considered a murderer in people’s eyes, and every day a struggle just to survive.
Annie Townsend’s mind keeps spinning in an endless loop of horror, and there seems to be nothing that she can do to stop it. Her mother has been murdered, and her brother Jimmy is missing, and the only link to finding him is an ex-con.
Sam has absolutely no use for the press or the cops, considering the way they have persecuted him since his release, but he tries to shove down his anger and resentment to help Annie. She is the first good thing to happen to him in a very long time, and he will do anything he can to hang on to her. Annie is in such a whirlwind of emotion that nothing seems to make sense to her. A battle rages between her heart and head, and with everyone warning her to stay away from Sam, Annie struggles to know her own mind.
There is a massive blanket of bitterness and angst surrounding the characters in this story. They are so truly mired in pain, sadness, and anger that their hearts are laid wide open for the reader. Sam virtually vibrates with his struggle to control his temper, and at times Annie’s despair leaves her practically catatonic. The bends and twists of the plot are expertly woven to create a dynamic finish sure to please any mystery lover.
