Pembra Redmond is strong-willed, beautiful, and intelligent. She is the person everyone in the county turns to with their problems, but she is afraid of one thing: falling in love.
Captain Richard Greyston is a handsome rake and the heir to an earldom. He is at the point in his life where he is ready to marry and produce an heir, but does not believe in love.
Captain Greyston made the mistake of relying on his friend's directions and ends up in a lonely churchyard with two young ladies and their stern governess. The ladies are clad only in their nightwear, so the gallant captain feels obligated to escort them home where he is offered accommodations for the night. Much to his surprise, the sour spinster governess turns out to be the girl’s beautiful elder sister. She seems immune to his charms and determined to do as she pleases. The two are forced into an engagement, and Pembra fights her attraction to Grey. Grey will not admit that he loves Pembra, and pride keeps the two apart.
Ms. Cox has written a classic Regency Romance, one of the best I have read. Pembra is very strong-willed and so is Grey, and their clashes make excellent reading. Sir Edward is a truly evil villain with more than a little bit of insanity in his make-up. The author has a really good feel for the time period and its customs. The supporting characters are just as well drawn as the main ones, and the plot is full of twists and turns, making for an exciting read.
