Janek Mattias Mitter is a teacher of history and philosophy. He is also newly married to his beautiful wife, Eva Ringmar. After a night of drinking and spicy sex with his wife, Janek wakes with a splitting headache and no idea who he is or what happened to his wife, who is floating face down in the bathtub.

Detective Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is not known as having a happy-go-lucky personality. When a quick judgment sends Janek to an asylum, there is just something that rings wrong about the case as well as the defendant.

Janek Mitter is sent to Majorna in Willemsburg where he will be held unless his mental health improves, but soon after the defendant is found murdered in his bed, surrounded by blood. Van Veeteren knows he should have followed his instincts and begins to investigate Janek’s murder as well as Eva’s. The clues he finds lead him to believe that whoever the murderer is, it is someone known by Janek and Eva. Van Veeteren knows he is getting close as one murder after another is revealed, including one that is almost twenty years old.

Mr. Nesser has written an unbelievably intense thriller full of twists and turns. Mind’s Eye starts off extremely well and the rest of the book continues to climb as the fierceness of the crimes escalates. I love a good mystery but am usually pretty good about guessing who did what. With all that is going on within the pages, there is just no way to guess. The complexity and complications of the characters will have you completely enthralled, and you will find yourself shocked once you realize what really happened to Eva Ringmar.
