Historical Adventure Romance

Lady Johanna Cornehl is an Admiral’s daughter and while she stands in socially for her late mother, she is a bit of a hellion. On a voyage she bangs heads with the ship’s captain, but develops a love for the charming doctor. When she realizes she can never have her doctor, she agrees to marry his best friend, the strong-willed captain.

Captain Harold “Hal” Monroe is not happy when he learns he must transport the daughter of the man who cost him his commission. He does, however, decide she is perfect for him, and eventually realizes his admiration is love, and nothing will separate them, if she agrees to be his.

In a topical locale, with plenty of adventure, the two learn about marriage and each other while confronting the villains who haunt their lives.

Johanna is a head strong woman, to the point that her attitude prevented me from empathizing with her, and at times I thought Hal could probably do better. Hal’s actions, in most of his activities, did not seem to match his willingness to marry someone who openly does not love him. Their story, though, is very compelling, and I could not put the book down. There are some problems with the history that distracted me, and I did question parts of the plot while still anxious to see what came next. The support characters are good but numerous. It is to the author’s credit that each is unique and interesting, even the villain. The dialogue is charming and dramatic, fitting each character well. I look forward to the next book in the series.
